Life & Work with Christina Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Davis.

Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The journey of Black Women Love Dogs began in September 2019 when I first welcomed my beloved pup, Kanna, into my life. Eager to connect with fellow dog moms, I sought out various groups, only to find they were predominantly composed of individuals who didn’t resemble me. Determined to create a space where black women and their furry companions could thrive, I scoured Instagram for similar pages but came up empty-handed. Undeterred, I decided to forge ahead and launch my own platform.

Initially envisioning a modest community of dog-loving women, I embarked on a quest to locate like-minded individuals. From initiating conversations in DMs to spreading the word at local dog parks in the DMV (DC, MD, VA) area, I slowly but steadily cultivated a following. As our community blossomed, so did its purpose. What began as a simple showcase for dog parents evolved into a comprehensive resource hub, offering insights into veterinary care, black-owned pet businesses, pet-friendly accommodations, and more.

Amidst the challenges of the pandemic, I began contemplating the prospect of hosting in-person gatherings to foster real-life connections among our members. With a desire to expand our reach and unite dog moms across geographical boundaries, I set my sights on organizing meetups. In 2021, a collaboration with a fellow black pet business owner paved the way for our inaugural event, which exceeded all expectations with over 50 black women and 60 dogs in attendance.

Since then, our meetups have traversed states, from Virginia to North Carolina and from Dallas to Houston, drawing together an ever-growing community of passionate dog moms. With each gathering, we celebrate the bond between black women and their four-legged companions, forging lasting friendships and enriching our collective love for dogs.

Today, our Instagram page boasts a following of over 20,000 from across the United States. From everyday dog mom anecdotes to travel adventures with our furry friends, comedic relief to pet health education, our content reflects the diverse tapestry of experiences within our vibrant community.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a proud HBCU graduate with a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Master of Business Administration. I’ve had the privilege of contributing to esteemed technical companies such as NASA and Bose.

While I hold my academic and professional achievements in high regard, what truly fills me with pride is the positive impact I have on others. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of knowing that my actions have touched someone’s life in a meaningful way. Hearing that I’ve made a difference fuels my passion and reinforces my commitment to leaving a positive imprint on the world.

In my ongoing mission to cultivate positivity and uplift the next generation, Black Women Love Dogs is proud to announce the launch of our Scholarship Fund. Our very first recipient will be announced in Spring 2024. This initiative reflects our commitment to fostering opportunities for growth and success within our community, and we look forward to making a meaningful impact in the lives of deserving students.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I remember growing up and going to see my neighbor’s dog, Jazz. He was a Great Dane, and I used to call him a horse. I loved that dog so much. I promised myself that I would have a dog like Jazz one day.
