Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Baruch Williams.
Hi Dr. Williams, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I attended the University of North Texas, where I received my bachelor’s degree (Cum Laude) in Psychology. I knew that I was intrigued by the brain, and I always wanted to become a child psychologist, but I had no idea that I could merge my interest for both areas. Neuropsychology provided the perfect intersection for both passions, prompting me to embark on the journey towards becoming a pediatric neuropsychologist. I moved to New York City, where I acquired research and clinical experience that would effectively prepare me for graduate school. I then moved back to my hometown, Houston, Texas, where I attended the Clinical Neuropsychology program at the University of Houston. In May 2015, I successfully completed the program and was awarded my Doctor of Philosophy. I then moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where I completed a two-year postdoctoral residency in Pediatric Neuropsychology at Kennedy Krieger & John Hopkins School of Medicine. Next up… job search! I knew that my heart was in Houston, and I was determined to return and begin my career in my hometown. However, during that period, the Houston job market for pediatric neuropsychologists was less than favorable. Determined to return home, I decided to pursue an opportunity in private practice. I was offered the opportunity to work at two private practices in the surrounding areas of Houston. It was August 2017, and things were falling into place! I was only 1-2 weeks away from completing my postdoctoral residency, and I was excited to return to Houston when I learned of Hurricane Harvey. The impact of Hurricane Harvey presented an unexpected set of personal and professional challenges. Personally, my family’s home and belongings were destroyed. Professionally, business was slow upon my return. However, over a short amount of time, Houston demonstrated its’ remarkable resilience, business picked up, and I acquired great knowledge about owning and operating a private neuropsychology practice. Next up…March 2020. March 2020 likely holds various meanings for different individuals. Spring Break. Global Pandemic. For me, it was when I decided that it was time for NACH, Inc. to take off, to fly into its’ purpose. For many business owners, the first steps can be intimidating and full of questions that have no clear answers. Add a global pandemic to the mix, and the questions double, if not triple. Nonetheless, I set an opening date, 09.01.20. Those numbers were engraved in my mind. I used those numbers for passwords so that I can always be reminded of the goal, vision, and purpose before me. Despite what was happening in the world, I did everything I could to prepare for that day. Since that day, I have remained dedicated to furthering the vision and mission of NACH, Inc. through active community engagement and by providing high-quality neuropsychological assessments aimed at positively impacting the lives of children, adolescents, and young adults. In November 2023, I also launched The IQ Lab, where we provide high-quality IQ assessments, same-day feedback, and same-day reports.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I began my practice, things were…slow. Really slow. Family and friends often asked, “How is business going?” I usually responded with “Slow.” In my head, the questions raced, “How is it supposed to be going?”, “Should things have picked up by now?” “Is it the pandemic?” “Is it me?” I had to challenge these thoughts by reminding myself that NACH, Inc. had to work and that I had to do what was in my power to make NACH, Inc. work. This meant using the slow times to volunteer, attend community meetings, expand my clinical knowledge, leave business cards at local daycares, clinics, schools, etc.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Neuropsychological Assessment Center of Houston, Inc. and The IQ LAB, Inc.?
At NACH, Inc., we specialize in neuropsychological assessment of children and young adults (currently from infants to college students). As pediatric neuropsychologists, we have expertise in how thinking, mood, and behavior are related to brain structures and functions. We provide the general services of a clinical psychologist to address issues such as ADHD, learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, depression, anxiety but are equally equipped to assess these issues if they happen to be related to medical conditions (e.g., epilepsy, prematurity, traumatic brain injury, genetic syndromes, prenatal alcohol exposure, and a host of other medical conditions). We are particularly knowledgeable of the special education process and are skilled in consultation with schools regarding appropriate services and interventions for children and adolescents. The mission of NACH, Inc. is to collaborate with children and their families so that families may be empowered to embrace the known (and unknown) and courageously pursue the interventions that will help their child reach their fullest potential.
The IQ Lab, Inc. administers high-quality individual cognitive abilities testing for children and adolescents. Typically, this type of testing is requested for the purpose of school admissions or to ensure appropriate educational placement for the child/adolescent. The IQ Lab, Inc. prioritizes the sharing of test results with requested schools as well as with the student’s parents. The goal of the assessment is not only to provide numerical information to requested schools but for parents to leave the testing session with a better understanding of their child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Given this goal, we briefly meet in person with the parents of each student prior to testing and immediately after the testing session to discuss the results of the evaluation. The report of findings is also provided on the same day of the evaluation. Given that the assessments are administered by psychologists, we will inform parents of any concerns that may arise during testing and that may warrant further evaluation beyond the scope of the IQ assessment (e.g., ADHD evaluation).
