Life & Work with Aleksandra Lobacheva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleksandra Lobacheva.

Aleksandra Lobacheva

Hi Aleksandra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my journey as a makeup artist in 2010 in Moscow, Russia. My background is in psychology, and after finishing university, I worked as an HR manager in a big company. But the office life didn’t suit me. I often found myself daydreaming about a more creative and free-spirited life. Always intrigued by the beauty industry, I decided to take a chance on it. I took makeup courses and eventually landed a job in film production, which felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the corporate world. Despite the challenges of switching careers, I felt alive and fulfilled. After that, I transitioned to the fashion industry, working on shoots with models. My journey as a makeup artist has been diverse—I’ve worked in weddings, traveled to Greece and France for bridal makeup, worked with artists and singers, and contributed to TV commercials and music videos. I’ve attended many makeup and hairstyling workshops, which have been invaluable in helping me appreciate the uniqueness of each client. The most rewarding part of my job now is seeing the joy in a woman’s eyes when she sees herself in the mirror.

Two years ago, I moved from Russia to Houston. After some time and a little break, I resumed my work with renewed energy and passion for the profession.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey and gaining experience have always been about challenging myself. You often step out of your comfort zone in your development, so you can’t help but grow. Also, this profession teaches you to be a marketer, organizer, creator, and your own manager. It’s a very multitasking profession. I’ve had the opportunity to work with celebrities and politicians. It is very responsible. Not only did I have to showcase my skills as a makeup artist, but also to find common ground with any person. My background in psychology has been very helpful in this regard.

The biggest challenge for me right now is communicating with clients as effectively in a non-native language as I do in my native language. Clients say I’m doing pretty well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In recent years, I’ve mainly focused on providing makeup and hair services for women for various important events in their lives, including weddings, engagements, birthdays, performances, and also for parties. I also collaborate with photographers and videographers for private photo sessions or video content. Currently, I provide on-location services in Houston and the area, but my dream is to have my own salon offering comprehensive beauty services with its own photo zone, makeup artist training, and beautiful events for glamorous women.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I really love the atmosphere in Houston – the diversity, the friendly and responsive people. And the incredible vast sky overhead with breathtaking sunsets.

As for the downsides, the long-lasting heat is something I’m still adjusting to. You know, I didn`t like cold winter and snow in Russia, now I find myself occasionally missing it. Also, the high humidity here can be a real enemy to perfect hairstyles. This is a real headache for professionals and something I have to get used to.
