Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Parish.
Lauren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey is inspired by my mom and my grandma. From a young age, I witnessed them being selfless in their offering of love, community, support, and a listening ear. While I started off in undergrad as a pre-med major, I eventually changed my major to psychology. I always knew that I wanted to help others; my major change and a volunteer opportunity with Big Brothers Big Sisters ignited my passion for service and confirmed my new major choice. Since that pivotal moment, I became an advocate for equitable accessibility to social and cultural capital in the form of mentorship and education.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to private practice has been relatively smooth. I initially thought that I would venture into a part-time business model, and I began flushing out the details at a leisurely pace. The opportunity to give my full attention to my business presented itself, and with a gentle nudge from my closest confidants, I was able to launch my practice, operating on a full-time basis. The challenge was getting comfortable with the transition from working for an organization to working for myself. I remember what mismanagement and chaos felt like, and it was important for me to implement balance, support, and not to be a bad boss to myself!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a mental health clinician, I am encouraged by the words of Audre Lorde, “Self-care is not self-indulgence; it is self-preservation.” I believe that everyone deserves a cathartic space where they feel safe, valued, and seen. It is a privilege to serve clients not only in Greater Houston, but across Texas by offering telehealth appointment options. I am keenly aware that the majority of Texas is designated as a mental health professional shortage area. Lack of access to and engagement with mental health services is well documented and an unfortunate statistic. Mental health disparities are ever looming, and this can be especially overwhelming for members of historically underrepresented clientele. Allyship and inclusivity are not buzzwords to me. My practice is dedicated to providing a personable and authentic approach which allows me to empower clients through the practice of mindfulness and awareness.
The focus of my practice is personalized counseling services tailored to the unique needs of individuals, couples, and families. The client-centric approach aims to foster emotional well-being, improve coping mechanisms, and strengthen relationships. I specialize in addressing a range of concerns, including anxiety, work stress, coping skills, self-esteem, family conflict, and burnout.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned is that you’re not going to know everything right away, and that is perfectly okay. My educational background and professional career experiences prepared me to be a clinician, but I’ve come to learn and embrace what it means to be an entrepreneur. I am thankful to be a part of the TWU AccelerateHER program, which provides resources and educational opportunities for women-owned businesses. It is empowering to learn from brilliant, passionate women and be a part of such a supportive community. Additionally, I’ve realized the importance of curating spaces where I can thrive. My office is intentionally decorated with items that inspire me daily, my circle is composed of people who uplift me, and I’m mindful of the language that I use with myself.
