Rising Stars: Meet Megan Botnick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Botnick.

Megan Botnick

Hi Megan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
So, I was born in Los Angeles and sort of thrown in the entertainment industry at a young age. By the age of 4, I had modeled for Disney and a couple of other gigs, which was a crazy connection. I have to give props to my mom, too. As for content creating, I could consider myself a content creator from the day I picked up an Apple device. When I got my first iPod Touch 4, the first thing I did was start vlogging before even knowing what it was. I then started making my first lifestyle, comedic videos on this platform called Keek where you uploaded 36 second videos, my only fan was my dad at the time because I didn’t have many friends growing up. Whenever Snapchat Private Stories were invented in 2018, I started a daily vlog that I’m still consistent with to this day. I went to the University of Houston to study psychology but knew deep down that that wasn’t the primary thing I had wanted to do my whole life, but I was too scared to pursue what I truly wanted. After covid hit in 2020, I was very lost with what I wanted to do and struggled with a deep depression because of it. I discovered one of the things that I credit to my self-esteem boost to this day and it’s the Myer Briggs type indicator. It may sound ridiculous, but I had understood myself inside and out because of it and identify my strengths and weaknesses, which then gave me the confidence to pursue the entertainment industry again. I had started by posting comedic TikTok’s consistently then eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. I started pursuing improv and would perform at improv comedy shows and build my acting portfolio through short acting roles. My goal is to entertain and inspire on my platform, from stupid comedic videos to sharing my journey with struggling with mental health to help others use mental “challenges” as a superpower instead of something that holds them back from achieving what they want.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes and no. Struggling with mental illnesses has definitely made certain things like consistency and focus a lot more difficult. But after I am able to divert my focus onto something I’m passionate about, I’m able to hyper-fixate on it until I am satisfied, which is what I’m able to do with my content. I also have unconditional love and support from my immediate friends and family which I am extremely thankful for and makes the road a lot smoother than it could be.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, my main hustle and thing I’m going for is content creating and acting. I do happen to specialize in what I am known for, which is comedy. I am most known for taking popular trends and creating popular trends in short-form content and adding my unique, dad or dark-humored creative twist. Contrary to what some might believe though, I do also take just as heavy of an interest in dramatic roles in film as I do comedic. I am most proud of how dedicated and consistent I am towards things I really want, and after I tell myself something is going to happen in my life, no matter the case, I never give up until it happens. I competed in a modeling and acting competition in 2021 and placed for a model spot, which was a competition where you were asked a question in front of a huge crowd, and the wittiest, most inspirational answer on the spot won. Growing my platform to a quarter of a million followers in the span of months is also something that I am proud of myself for doing, but this isn’t to take away from the fact that greatness takes time and that it’s okay for other things to take longer. I believe my persistent optimism, regardless of the circumstances, sets me apart from others. Putting yourself out there to such a vulnerable degree is a scary thing, but if you give me 3 positive comments and 100 negative ones, I’ll take the 3 and run with it.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the fact that it’s an affordable big city. There’s a lot of different places to eat, and the nightlife is some of the best I’ve ever been to in my life. Southern hospitality is no myth; the people here are super friendly and respectful. What I am not the biggest fan of is the weather, it’s extremely unpredictable and will go from being beach weather to near freezing the next day. Eating and nightlife are also the main attractions that Houston tends to bring, so it can get a little repetitive sometimes.
