Community Highlights: Meet Symphony Webb of Urban Culture Apparel

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Symphony Webb.

Symphony Webb

Hi Symphony, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Symphony Webb, but I’m known to many as Symphony Speaks. My entrepreneurial journey began after I graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications. My post-graduate journey was a bit challenging because I wasn’t able to find a job. I was given a notebook as a graduation gift, and I used it to write down affirmations a quotes to keep myself encouraged during my job search. This is where Urban Culture Apparel was birthed. I used the affirmations in my notebook to put them on t-shirts. I knew that if these statements could encourage me, hopefully, they could do the same for others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I had a glamorized story of how Urban Culture Apparel became an overnight success, but that isn’t my testimony. It has not been easy at all! I launched Urban Culture Apparel on December 1, 2017, while starting my first semester of graduate school, interning at one of the top news stations in the country, and working at Nike as a sales associate. All while building my media career by covering events in Houston. 2017 was a busy year for me! Aside from that, Urban Culture Apparel has been self-funded since its inception, which can be difficult for any business or business owner when you don’t have access to capital to grow and sustain your business.

In 2021, I made the decision to temporarily close UCA to pivot and restructure the brand. What was supposed to be a two-month hiatus – turned into two years! While working diligently on the UCA rebrand, I found a great studio space and moved my business out of my apartment. I finally relaunched on December 1, 2023, six years from the date of my initial launch date!

Although being a “solopreneur” can be tiring at times, it’s also very rewarding to reflect on how far I come and all that I’ve accomplished as a business owner. Especially when I’m the first person in my family to ever do something such a this. I’m still learning as I go. It’s all a part of my journey, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Houston! Houston is my second home, and has been since 2005 when my family and I came here during Hurricane Katrina. The traffic took some getting use to and still does but I love it here!
