Today, we’d like to introduce you to Renata Goos.
Hi Renata, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Renata, and I am originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I have been living in Houston since 2008 and love this city, which now is home. I am a photographer, the owner of SHINE Photography. SHINE Photography started as a way to combine my experience in business with my passion for photography. Since I graduated from college, I had multiple corporate jobs working for multinational companies, and that is where I learned the love and acumen for business. I was very successful, but after having my second child, it became clear to me that I needed to find the flexibility to be more present with my family. I quit my 9-5 job and started to dive into the photography world, initially still a hobby. I started to understand the market and the possibilities, I decided to focus my learnings and training on real estate and architectural photography. The main reason for that decision was so I could combine my business experience with my passion. Initially, I worked under a photographer based in Dallas who was a great mentor; he showed me all the ropes from a photography standpoint and how to create beautiful photos for real estate agents. With knowledge at hand, in 2021, I started to develop the business in Houston, and since then, we have not stopped growing. Today, SHINE is a team with three photographers, including myself and an office manager, who help us with the day-to-day operations. What differentiates SHINE is the focus we give to maintaining excellence in customer service and image quality. There is so much that goes into the final product, and I am always looking for ways to improve it. Our clients range from realtors, Airbnb owners, architects, interior designers, and commercial businesses. In 2023, SHINE was part of over 200 shoots, and we look to get even more done in 2024.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have come into many challenges while developing the business. The initial challenge was to break into the market; I spent a long period of time calling, emailing, and trying to get clients to give me an opportunity. The real estate photography market is very competitive , and a lot of realtors have a relationship with their photographers, so it is hard to get in. I had to be persistent and not give up.
The second biggest challenge was to maintain quality while growing, you have a very short period of time to deliver the photos, so I had to map the entire process to identify ways I could maintain the quality, and those are passed in detail to my editing team and photographers. This piece took a lot of time and try/error with many sleepless nights. Trust me, I am still working on new initiatives and ways to make things even smoother. With such a large range of services, this is no easy task. The more time we have to spend on our clients and on-site, the better chances for us to continue to grow, so I need the post-work piece to work very smoothly.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer; my main focus is on architecture, spaces, and homes. So, my clients are realtors, designers, architects, and businesses in general. I am known for having a great eye for angles, angles that make photos pleasing to the eye. I love photographing spaces; I have this feeling when I walk into a room; I can see all the lines and how they can look harmonious when composed in a photo. This ability to transport how a space feels through an image is one of the biggest joys of my work. The passion for photos and the need to always deliver the best is one of my differentials, I also love meeting new people and networking. I was most proud when my work was showcased at multiple news outlets such as The Today Show and Yahoo. Link: https://www.today.com/home/home/texas-townhome-friends-themed-rooms-hits-market-rcna20651
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a quiet kid; I always loved drawing and helping at home, and I also loved singing. I was very driven since little, in my school they used to give a golden medal for the student with the highest grade and that was my goal every year, I remember getting a lot of those throuout the years. I did some sports, but it was never my priority, I really thrived being alone and studying, and later I enjoyed spending time with friends.
