Today, we’d like to introduce you to Siobhan Higgins.
Hi Siobhan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a professional soccer player, and I played in Scotland, Hungary, Portugal, and Northern Ireland. In between those contracts, I took a year off from playing, and I began working in Houston, Texas. At the same time, I started my Master’s in Sport & Performance Psychology at the University of St. Thomas. In December of 2023, I graduated with my Master’s degree and wanted to tell my story in an entertaining way whilst incorporating what I’ve learned and evidence-based advice for other athletes. This brought me to begin my podcast, Mind Goals, which is a platform I use to tell the audience about my experiences playing soccer and teach others a little more about my mindset.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
By no means has my journey been linear. It has been extremely challenging. I’ve faced serious injuries, been directly impacted by natural disasters, faced heartache, dealt with multiple setbacks, managed to deal with unethical coaches, contemplated quitting and returning home, you name it.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently getting my feet wet with sports psychology consulting. My past expertise has been in creative services such as social media content and administrative work. I appreciate my creative and organizational side. However, I am passionate about sports, especially people and our minds. So now I coach youth soccer in Houston, and I story-tell and advise athletes. I am known for my humor, relatability, and work ethic. I hope to teach other athletes the mental skills that I use to overcome adversity and hope to enlighten them about the beauty in the journey.
I am the most proud of having a growth mindset. I am optimistic and energetic, and I am always up for a challenge. I credit myself with being very self-aware and I am always seeking improvement. I am a very intrinsically motivated individual and I find beauty in little wins, because a win is a win.
Something that sets me apart from others is my ability to face adversity with a smile on my face. I am committed to continue learning about the world around me, myself, and others.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as a feeling of fulfillment. It does not have to be obtaining the end goal either; rather, it can be defined as finding fulfillment along the way.
