Life & Work with Arabella Hibbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arabella Hibbert.

Arabella Hibbert

Arabella, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After having both of my boys a few years ago, I left the workforce to spend more time with them. As a stay-at-home mom, I was looking for a way to socialize, but I also needed to engage my brain. Friends introduced me to the magical world of Mahjong. It allowed me to activate my brain and spend meaningful time with friends… and the best part it was so much fun!

My journey began with one lesson, quickly followed by another, straight into weekly play with friends. One group turned into several, and suddenly, I was playing five to six times a week. From my earliest moments with the tiles, I was captivated by the game! This was exactly what I had been searching for. Mahjong gave me the chance to think strategically, make meaningful new friendships, and deepen my existing ones.

My Mahjong groups quickly grew, and friends started asking me to teach them how to play. Over time, I casually taught one friend, then another, and before I knew it, I had taught over a dozen people, and the referrals just kept coming. I realized this wasn’t just a hobby anymore: I knew the rules, understood the strategy, and had a knack for teaching it. I decided to combine my love for Mahjong, marketing, and people. Late last year, I joined the Mahji Mentors program through the Dallas-based company Oh My Mahjong and became a certified Mahjong instructor.

In November 2023, I launched Marchesa Mahjong, and through word of mouth, my business started to grow. In five short months, I’ve taught more than 100 people throughout Houston, and I’m only getting started.

Sharing Mahjong with others is my mission and passion, and my love for the game has only deepened over time. I wish for everyone to know the laughter and joy that comes from playing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my own small business was scary, and the fear of failure was real, but my passion for the game prevailed. I successfully launched Marchesa Mahjong with the help and support of my family and friends, who have encouraged me every step of the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an American Mahjong instructor. I teach beginners the basics or help seasoned players hone their skills.

I’m proud that I didn’t let my fear of failure stop me from pursuing this dream. Nothing worth doing comes easily, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this journey. I’d like to encourage others to join the fun.

What sets me apart is my relaxed approach with clients. From the second a student walks in the door, I treat them like an old friend. I like to make each lesson fun from the very beginning and cultivate camaraderie with students. I want every student who walks away from my class to not only have a good foundation of play but a love of the game.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I believe in lifting up others, and I love to collaborate. Have an idea? Great! Let’s sit down with a glass of vino and chat.

I encourage you to follow me on Instagram @MarchesaMahjong for tips, tricks, and Mahjong fun!
