Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Haney.
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always taken pride in my home and how it looks, and wanting to personalize it with my style. Several years ago, when shiplap started becoming popular, I remember wanting to put it up on two walls in our home and working to find contractors for pricing quotes for the job. After receiving the quotes, I realized that paying someone to do the job wasn’t going to be in our budget, so my husband, Jake, and I decided to take on the task of doing it ourselves. It turned out really good and we were so pleased, and it basically lit a fire under us to figure out how to do home projects ourselves. Ever since then, we have been doing majority of all of our home remodels and renovations on our own. Those who were close to us were always wondering what projects we were up to or asking advice on what may look good in a space in their home, and that is what inspired me to create my Instagram, ourTXnest. It was a fun way to share all of the new things we were making happen in our home with everyone close to us, and it has kind of grown from there.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say, just like anything in life, it has its ups and downs. I am a stay-at-home mom of three kids, so they are my number one priority, and as much as I love creating content, that often comes with projects needing to be done or styling a space, which can be time-consuming and/or costly, so it isn’t always something that we can get done and ready to share as soon as maybe I would hope it could. Another big factor in a lot of my projects is my husband’s expertise, which is carpentry and general construction. He is the hands behind a lot of the bigger projects whether it be building furniture or wood accent walls, however he has a full-time job and that sometimes extends projects duration or starting. We still always try to get everything done when we are able to, with a positive attitude and lots of excitement once we get to see the final outcome.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My home is definitely my peaceful space, but it is also my workspace. Creating social media posts is my job, along with being a stay-at-home mom. I feel most proud of the unique spaces I have been able to create throughout our home. There are a lot of standout projects in our home that I have been so excited to share on socials with everyone, some being my home gym, my kitchen, and my master bedroom, just to name a few. I hope I am most known for my ability to show what a space could become. My last two homes have been older and needed a lot of remodeling done, so being able to show what a little imagination and some hard work can do to completely change a space is something I love to do, and I hope it stands out to people. I also think my design style sets me apart from others in the sense that it may not be what someone would traditionally do in a space, but I do my best to inspire others to make those choices that make them happy in their home, even if it isn’t necessarily what is trendy, but all while hoping my style might inspire something in their space.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been introverted. I had a really challenging childhood. My dad passed away when I was a toddler, and after that, my childhood was filled with some really hard things before my mom tragically passed away in my junior year of high school. I think being on my own, starting at 17, made me who I am today. I finished high school and went to cosmetology school at the same time as working two jobs until I graduated. I have never been afraid to take on a challenge because of the circumstances I have been through; although several were tragic and extremely tough, I think they made me who I am today. One thing about social media is you can be whoever you are and share as much about you as you feel comfortable. The fact that I am introverted naturally makes me a homebody, which works out in this scenario since that is where I do my job and what it is all based on. I am thankful for where I am in my life today and all that I have.
