Today we’d like to introduce you to Yomi Sowunmi.
Hi Yomi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My journey into the world of photography began when I first got a camera to take pictures of my Airbnb. Initially, it was just about capturing the essence of the space to attract potential guests. However, I quickly realized the I loved the idea of freezing moments in time. Photography soon became more than just a hobby; it was a sincere curiosity and passion to be explored.
As I continued to experiment with my camera, I naturally gravitated towards taking portraits of my friends. There was something intriguing about capturing the personalities and emotions of the people around me. With each click of the shutter, I found myself immersed in a world of storytelling, where every picture had the power to convey a unique narrative.
From there, my interest in photography only grew stronger. I began to study different techniques, experiment with lighting and composition, and push the boundaries of my creativity. It wasn’t long before I started receiving requests from people to take their portraits. That’s when I realized I had stumbled upon something truly special.
I decided to pursue formal training. I enrolled in classes, attended workshops, and spent countless hours honing my skills. With each new lesson learned, I felt myself growing more confident in my abilities as a photographer.
Despite not having my own studio space, I’ve been able to carve out a niche for myself in the industry, focusing on various aspects such as beauty, branding, birthdays, headshots, weddings, events, and maternity shoots. Whether it’s capturing the elegance of a bride on her special day or the excitement of a brand launching its new product, I pour my heart and soul into every project I undertake.
With time, I’ve found that the world itself serves as my canvas. I thrive on the challenge of finding the perfect location for each shoot, whether it’s a picturesque outdoor setting or a unique indoor space. And through my lens, I strive to capture not just images but memories that will last a lifetime for my clients.
Every shoot is an opportunity for me to connect with my subjects, to tell their stories through the art of photography. And as I continue this journey, I am constantly inspired by the beauty and diversity of the world around me, knowing that there are endless moments waiting to be captured, one frame at a time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Easy? No. But worth it. For one, I had to navigate the competitive landscape of the photography industry. With so many talented photographers, standing out and establishing my own brand was no easy feat.
Without my own studio space, I had to get creative in finding locations for shoots and managing logistical constraints. This meant dealing with unpredictable weather conditions for outdoor shoots, securing permissions for indoor locations, and ensuring that all the necessary equipment were easily transportable.
Another challenge I encountered was balancing the demands of running a photography business with the creative aspects of the craft. From marketing and client communication to bookkeeping and administrative tasks, there were numerous responsibilities to juggle alongside actually taking pictures. Learning to manage my time effectively and prioritize tasks was essential in overcoming this hurdle.
Additionally, as a freelance photographer, I faced the uncertainty of inconsistent income and the need to constantly pursue new clients. Building a reliable client base and maintaining positive relationships with them required patience, persistence, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
Technical challenges also presented themselves along the way, particularly when it came to mastering new photography techniques and keeping up with advancements in equipment. Continuous learning and staying updated with the latest trends and tools in the industry became indispensable.
Overall, each obstacle served as a valuable learning experience that made me more resilient as a photographer. Lessons of perseverance and adaptability paired with a passion for the craft have been critical for my growth as an artist which in turn encourages me to continue pursuing my aspirations of immortalizing moments in people’s lives.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I faced various challenges and experiences that shaped my journey into photography. Like many, I grappled with finding my identity and passion amidst the pressures of societal expectations and academic pursuits. While I excelled in academics, there was always a yearning for something more, something that stirred my soul in a profound way.
Photography entered my life almost serendipitously when I received my first camera as a gift. Growing up in Houston, Texas, I was surrounded by a rich tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and people. With my camera in hand, I began to see the world through a different lens, quite literally. I found solace in capturing the beauty of nature, the energy of urban life, and the nuances of human emotions.
However, pursuing photography as a career was not without its challenges. There were doubts and uncertainties, both from within and from others, about whether I could turn my passion into a viable profession. Despite these obstacles, I was determined to follow my heart and carve out my own path in the world of photography.
As I honed my skills and navigated the intricacies of the industry, I found inspiration and support in unexpected places. Whether it was the encouragement of friends or the mentorship of seasoned professionals, I learned to embrace the journey, embracing both the successes and the setbacks as part of the process.
Looking back, I realize that every experience, every obstacle, and every triumph has contributed to shaping the photographer I am today. From the challenges of finding my voice in a crowded field to the joys of connecting with clients and capturing their stories, each moment has been a lesson in resilience, creativity, and perseverance.
Today, as I continue to pursue my passion for photography, I am grateful for the journey that has brought me to this point. It is a journey that began with a simple camera and a love for capturing moments, and it is a journey that I know will continue to unfold, one frame at a time.
