Inspiring Conversations with Jennifer Salazar of Jenn Ash Aesthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Salazar.

Jennifer Salazar

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jennifer Salazar, and I’m honored to share my story in hopes to inspire others who may be facing difficulties or challenges, particularly teenage mothers. I was born into a beautiful and loving family, and I’m blessed with the best younger sister. Growing up, my sister and I always talked about moving to New York, having great jobs, and enjoying the hustle and bustle of life. I dreamed of becoming an Anesthesiologist and enjoying a life with a career in Medicine. Well, you know what they say: you make plans, and then life happens.

In junior high and high school, I centered my focus on courses and opportunities that would prepare me to be a well-rounded Physician by being involved in National Honor Society, Spanish Club, School Newspaper Editor, volunteering at various charities and church functions, participating in volleyball, tennis, and cheerleader, shadowing Physicians, all while maintaining my place as number 9 in my graduating class. The last thing I ever planned for was to fall in love and become a mother my junior year of high school.

Statistically speaking, according to the CDC, 3 in 10 American girls will get pregnant at least once by age 20. Parenthood is the leading reason teen girls drop out of school. More than half if teen mothers never graduate high school. Less than 2% of teen mothers obtain a college degree by the age of 30. Clearly, the statistics were not in my favor. Some of my most critical years in life became significantly more challenging for me. I, unfortunately, endured people in the school losing faith that I would ever achieve my dream of becoming a medical provider and assuming that I would likely drop out, have more children, and just be another number to add to the previously mentioned statistics. However, with a rock-solid support team of my family and God, I was able to convert any negative energy around me to be the fuel I needed to keep my head held high and my eyes on the prize of achieving my dreams, even with the additions of being a wife and a mother.

I maintained an excellent relationship with my teachers and high school counselor, and this helped me a hundred-fold. They all had witnessed my hard work despite me adding the extra challenge of being a teen mother and encouraged me to apply for many scholarships, including The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It was their belief, encouragement, and my belief that I had all the knowledge and determination necessary to achieve my educational goals, that caused me to apply, and thanks be to God, I received many scholarships, including a Rodeo scholarship. I was and still am so grateful for my scholarships and the financial sigh of relief I felt throughout my first 4 years of college.

I graduated with Honors from Lamar Consolidated High School in 2007. While going through a divorce during my first year of college, I still completed my first 4 years of college “on time” and graduated in 2011 from The University of Houston with my Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology-Exercise Science and a Minor in Biology. After graduating from The University of Houston, I enrolled in Nursing school at HCC Coleman Health Sciences Downtown. During my 2 years of Nursing School, I got married to my now husband, who, to this day, has been my #1 fan and supporter. I graduated in 2013 with my Nursing Degree and immediately transitioned into PA school at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. During my first semester at UTMB in Galveston, I also reviewed and prepared for the NCLEX, the nursing State board exam, because the Lord knows that I invested too much into my nursing education to not have those RN initials behind my name. By the grace of God, I passed my Nursing boards to become a licensed registered nurse, continued my Physician Assistant courses and clinical rotations, and in 2015, I graduated from UTMB in Galveston with my Masters of Physician Assistant Studies. I immediately applied my new earned knowledge as a PA and began working as a Primary Care and Internal Medicine PA for 2 years. I then explored my interest in surgery as a Neurosurgical PA and first assist at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands for 4 years while welcoming 2 more beautiful daughters to the world. The last 3 years I have been blessed to be practicing in Aesthetic Medicine, which is the area of medicine I know I was born to practice. At the age of 34, I am honored to have achieved my ultimate goal of opening my own practice last year. Jenn Ash Aesthetics is a medical spa in The Woodlands, TX, and a living, breathing testament to my passion for serving others and a physical representation of the fruits of my years of labor and hard work. I’m so blessed to work with healthy patients to help them look and feel their best and age like fine wine, getting better with time.

I am honored and blessed to have waded through the challenges I have had in my life, defy the odds stacked against me, and ultimately pave the way for my extraordinary achievements. I pray my story provides hope and inspiration to others to embrace their unique challenge as an opportunity for growth and eventual success. Thank you for allowing me to share my story with you.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. Life has not been smooth. It has very much felt like a roller-coaster with many ups and downs and twist and turns. I don’t regret anything as all the challenges have made me who I am today.
