Life & Work with Lakeia Rice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakeia Rice.

Lakeia Rice

Hi Lakeia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’m a vocally enthusiastic singer-songwriter based in Houston, Texas, formally known as “Keey Diaz” and now known as “Leaux Keey.”

I started singing at the age of 5. Branching off into my teenage years, performing in school plays, expos, and out-of-state events.

My love and passion for music and vocal expansion stemmed from my musically inclined household and my parents who were musicians, singers and played multiple instruments.

I’m a naive to Birmingham, Al,

where I studied music, dance, creative writing, and theatre arts at ‘The Alabama School of Fine Arts’. There, I was able to hone my skills before transferring out of the program.

I’m a now multitalented performer who has graced stages with my heartfelt poetry, energetic choreography, enchanting personality, and alluring voice in many cities & states, including Alabama, Atlanta, California, Florida, and Texas.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My music career hasn’t been the smoothest. I struggled for years with social anxiety and childhood traumas that caused a delay in my creative process along with the fear of being seen by others.

After working on myself and getting therapy, I was able to tap back into my creative self.

In 2020, I began my music career, self-recording, engineering, and producing my first EP in a closet with styrofoam-padded walls.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in singing with a love for music in all genres, focusing on the feel of the music and not boxing myself into one genre.

I’m best known for rhythm and blues (RnB) and soul.

What sets me apart from other artists is my BIG, powerful, soulful voice, my vocal range, my runs, and my 90’s & 2000’s aesthetic.

I’ve been honorably compared to artists such as Jazmine Sullivan, Jhene Aiko, Sza, Summer Walker, Monica, and Brandy.

I’m most proud of my dedication to never giving up, striving to master my artistry, and embracing my unique skills of songwriting and singing.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that no one probably knows about me is that I play the clarinet, harmonica, and skat.
