Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary McElligott.
Hi Mary, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Brookside Village Farmers Market has been operating since October 2021. Located just south of Beltway 8, we are nestled in a rural neighborhood. We are a true farmers market, offering locally grown produce, eggs, honey, mushrooms, meat, roasted coffee beans, sauces/spices in addition to locally made crafts. We feature live music and various activities and educational programs as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our market team has faced some struggles- we started at the end of the pandemic. Our challenges include securing vendors and educating our community about the true cost of locally produced food and products.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Brookside Village Farmers Market, a nonprofit market held once a month every second Sunday at Lawhon Elementary School from 10 am-2 pm. We offer locally grown produce, eggs, honey, meat, soaps, spices, salsas and more. It’s a wonderful community builder.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
It helps to have a team that you can count on to get things going and to keep things moving.
