Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Roozbeh Ghasemi.
Hi Roozbeh, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I came to the US about 14 years ago and started pursuing my dream job, which is dentistry. I had my education from overseas. I have my MBA from there, and I was thinking I just need to pass the exams and take the pre-requisite courses in order to get into dental school. Sooner after comin here, I realized that I have to start over and go to college again and earn another degree to be competitive with other applicants. I did not give up and started going to college and took courses that I had passed before overseas but did not have any choice other than taking them because I could not transfer most of my credit hours. Took me about 2 years to have some courses in order to apply for universities. I was working 3 jobs and going to school at the same time. I was working at Starbucks early in the morning. I was waking up at 5 am getting ready, and go to Starbucks till 11, and would come home to take shower and change to go to college for my courses and I was working there until 9 pm, and then I will do private tutoring at people’s house to help their kids with their education and prepare them for their exams. I applied for hygiene program at UTHSC Dental Branch at Houston and got in. I got married almost at the same time and now everything was getting harder. I had to study hard to keep up with my grades and also had to work harder since I have a family now. I tried my best at Hygiene program and applied for dental school by the last year of the program. I got invited for the interview and got into my dream school, UTHSC Dental Branch in Houston. During that 2 years of Hygiene program, I was always seeing myself as a dental student there and tried to keep connected with dental students to help prepare myself. I Studied hard during dental school and worked on the side after school and during the weekend as dental hygienist, and finished everything and ready to graduate, but guess what?!? Covid happed and everything got shut down, and we could not take the board exam in order to obtain the license to practice as a dentist. Took school and state board awhile to figure out what can be done to help us. Finally took the board exam and got my license 4 months later than I supposed to, and started practicing my dream profession. I have been practicing since then and started to work for different clinics and companies, but very soon, I realized that I want to have my own office and treat my patients like my family and take great care of my patients, and keep them happy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have explained this in previous question. It was not, lots of sleepless nights, hardworking and effort and challenges. I remember I drove from Austin to Houston twice in a day to meet the registration deadline and provide all documents. Covid was another challenge since everything was shut down, and I could not work as a hygienist and was not able to obtain my dental license to work as a dentist. Having 3 jobs and going to college, and keeping up with your grades is not easy at all, but nothing comes easy and with no effort.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been so curious and wanted to learn more. I have always been in technology and liked to learn more about things. I am still the same. Always looking for new products and machines to help make things easier and faster. I love challenges, and this is one of the reasons I like dentistry. It is full of challenges, and every day you face a new one.
