Rising Stars: Meet Amanda Vlastas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Vlastas.

Amanda Vlastas

Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.

When my family and I moved to Houston, I felt a bit lost and overwhelmed. In 2017, with two young children and a desire for connection, I decided to start West University Moms. Motherhood had engulfed my life, and I found myself longing for friendship and community. I hadn’t been working since my first son was born, and the challenges of new motherhood were sometimes daunting.
As I spent time exploring Houston’s activities, attractions, and parks for my kids, I realized I could share this valuable information with other moms. So, I channeled my passion, skills, and drive into creating a community and resource site for moms: West University Moms. It became a way for me to connect with others and help fellow moms navigate this wonderful yet sometimes challenging journey of motherhood.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the challenges was that I didn’t really know anyone in Houston.  With only a few friends, I knew I needed to build my network, so I attended nearly every event, gala, fundraiser, podcast, and activity I was invited to. Those early years were truly exhausting, but through these efforts, I met wonderful people and formed a vibrant community. These experiences were crucial in growing West University Moms into the supportive network it is today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I love most about West University Moms is championing for moms, I enjoy supporting and helping them. Motherhood is a wild journey, far different from what you see in movies, and I like to remind moms that they aren’t alone. One of my favorite features of West University Moms is our “Meet a Mom” interview, where moms share their stories, hobbies, and discuss their businesses or passion projects. It’s my way of recognizing moms who might not be acknowledged elsewhere and giving back to my “mom community.”

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I assist local businesses in expanding their reach through my multiple platforms, including blog posts on the website, email newsletters, and social media posts on Instagram and Facebook. Additionally, I manage a private Facebook group for moms, providing a space where they can seek advice and share referrals.
