Today we’d like to introduce you to Shreeda Tailor.
Shreeda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out in the medical field, with a degree in Nuclear Medicine. After doing graduate work in Education, I moved to Minnesota and found that I couldn’t find work and I was feeling burned out. My creative side just wasn’t being utilized. I started out as a bridal stylist while going to beauty school. I am a second generation stylist, meaning my mother is a stylist so I grew up in this environment. I found that I had learned so much just from watching her all those years and hit the ground running while in school. I briefly worked at a salon, but when we moved to Houston, I decided to take the plunge and opened up my own studio. Armed with experience from my parent’s salon and my passion, I dove in and never looked back. I started session styling very early on and really love the adrenaline rush of the backstage experience. Being on set or behind the scenes of fashion week is the ultimate rush. A few years ago I started teaching makeup certification courses to professionals and later became an educator for Living proof. I was able to utilize my education, science, and math background in a creative field.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth. The biggest sacrifice of all was time. I had to sacrifice time from my husband and kids to pursue this line of work. It’s really hard when your child looks up at you and says they miss you, please stay home. But in the end it is all for them. I am teaching them about work ethic, and what it takes to make your dreams a reality.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with J. Tailor Salon – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in corrective color and balayage highlights, as well as Bridal Styling and Editorial Styling. Whether I’m working with my team or on my own, I am most proud that we have so many happy clients. When a client first comes in they are unhappy with their hair and that displaces to how the feel about themselves. To be able to turn that around and have them smiling and bouncing out the door is what it’s about. I think what sets apart J. Tailor Salon is that we ensure the client is educated. We teach about the science of hair and haircare, exactly what is happening when we color the hair and why we are choosing to take certain steps while coloring. Clients find it fascinating and often tell us that they’ve never had anyone take the time to explain what is going on. I believe if someone is making physical changes to you or your body, you should know what’s happening!! Our clients are able to make better decisions about their hair because they are informed and so they go on to have the best hair days of their life. Our brides often write us back years later to tell us they were flipping through their pictures and love what we did and how we made them feel on their special day. Ultimately to make a positive impact on another human being is our goal. Whether it’s how they feel about themselves or helping them acquire a skill and do something that was really overwhelming before.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston, it has always been home. When I travel to anywhere else, I’m always comparing things to Houston. I’ve lived in a few different places, but I’ve always come right back. It’s a beautiful city with beautiful people, diverse cultures, and amazing food and talent. The only complaint I have is the same one everyone else has, TRAFFIC!
