Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Botts.
Hi Lisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a single mom and found myself laid off of a really great job in December of 2008. The job market was in the tank at the time, and I was struggling. I went to a job fair at NRG and there was “THE ORKIN MAN.” My first thought was, “Ew, I don’t want to kill bugs.” But they were actually looking for business-to-business salespeople. I started with them two weeks later, the training was amazing, and they did a very good job of desensitizing us to bugs.
I switched from sales to service after a bit and ran their multifamily division for a couple of years, then switched to various positions and finally switched to another nationwide firm. I stayed there for two years until they were bought out by a much larger firm and that’s when I decided it was time to open my own firm.
The large companies are great for training, and opportunities to move up and all sorts of things, but I really wanted to focus on my customers and employees more than the bottom line. Service to others is my calling and passion, and I believe smaller companies are better at providing that top-notch level of service.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the biggest struggles have been knowing where to spend your money in the beginning. There are so many different ways to get your name out there, and not all of them are effective, and some of them are just an absolute waste of money. Unfortunately, there’s not really a how to guide to tell you which ones are most effective, it changes from industry to industry. But I think network marketing works best for my industry, and I spent a lot of wasted money finding that gold nugget.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I own Peacock Pest Prevention and we are a commercial and residential pest control company that specializes in assessment-based pest control (also known as IPM). Applying pesticides is not always the best way to achieve control of insects, especially in sensitive establishments like doctor’s offices, daycares, and food processing facilities. Sometimes, it’s just about inspecting, identifying corrective options, and implementing those options/changes.
I believe what sets us apart from other pest control companies is attention to detail and a commitment to customer service. I believe that pest control is necessary to the safety of our food supply, to our health and to our quality of life. Taking care of people and the environment is very important to me and is a tenant of our company’s very existence. If there is a way to resolve the problem without creating more issues for the environment, we will find it.
Reducing harmful chemicals, reducing harm to pollinators, finding greener solutions are all a part of what makes Peacock Pest Prevention different.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Helping others is the most important thing you can do in life. Giving to others, helping everywhere you can, is the most important part of being human. The best part is, the more you give, the more you gain. You gain friends, allies, love, and trust when you help others.
