Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Britton.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My story began in 2015. I had just graduated from college with a BFA in Graphic Design, and during this time, I began to contemplate the future and what I wanted to pursue. Although I enjoyed graphic design, it was never my passion. I’ve always loved K-pop music and journalism. This prompted me to post on a K-pop Facebook group, asking if like-minded individuals wanted to start a YouTube channel with me. That’s where I met a fantastic group of women to embark on this journey with. However, that venture quickly fell through. Despite the setback, I remained determined to succeed. This determination led me to start a new channel called TokkiStar, a media outlet created by fans for fans. We are dedicated to providing our viewers/readers with all the latest news and hottest topics on their favorite Korean celebrities.
Throughout the years, the company has achieved a lot. The success of my YouTube channel spawned the website Tokkistar.com, which gave me a chance to dive into the world of journalism and attend K-pop concerts as a press. I also took a leap of faith and began creating K-pop events for fans of all ages. Our most popular event was the BTS Movie drive-in, which brought out around 300+ K-pop fans from all around Texas.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been easy throughout the years with my company. I’ve faced so many trials and tribulations. I would say the biggest hurdle would be that our ideas and concepts tend to inspire bigger companies within the industry, almost to the point where they claim the idea as their own. However, those incidents have taught me to move in silence and not take it so personally. Nowadays, I just see it as a compliment.
We’ve been impressed with Tokki Star, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tokkistar is a media outlet that originated as a YouTube channel back in 2016. Since then, we have evolved into a full-fledged digital media website. Our primary objective is to provide a platform to international K-pop fans, regardless of their age, and give them a voice. As we have stated before, we are created by the fans, for the fans. Our mission is to keep our audience up to date with the latest news and trending topics about their favorite Korean celebrities. Our followers come from all over the world, including South Korea, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the Philippines, and the United States. Our website mainly features interviews with both upcoming and established artists and creatives. We take great pride in exhibiting the best artists from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their level of fame or status, to our audience. In addition to this, we specialize in doing press for K-pop concerts in our local area, creating engaging content, and organizing small-scale events in Houston.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the things I appreciate the most about our city is its reputation for being a hub of diversity. Houston is a melting pot where one can experience a vast array of cultures and activities. There is always something going on here, and the possibilities are endless. Moreover, Houstonians have a strong sense of community; regardless of where you come from, you’ll always find a way to fit in. They are warm and welcoming, and you’ll feel right at home in no time.
As for my dislikes, I would have to say. I’m not too fond of the traffic.
