Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Lewis
Hi Allie, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have been absolutely obsessed with books ever since I read “Matilda” by Roald Dahl as a little girl. As a kid, my favorite store was Barnes & Noble, and my favorite gifts to receive were books. while my parents thought I was sound asleep each night, I was actually tucked under my covers, attachable reading light on, nose in a novel. When anyone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said I wanted to be an author (after a brief stint of “wanting to drive the ice cream truck”), but when the time came to choose a college major, being an author didn’t seem practical, so I chose to study journalism. My college actually had a “professional writing” major, and I so wish I could go back and tell freshman-year-Allie to just go for it! Fast forward a few years after graduating, I read a book that had been independently published by the author, and I thought, “Hey, I could totally do this.” So, I opened up a blank document on my laptop and began writing. I didn’t tell a soul other than my husband that I was writing a book because I truly wanted to see if I enjoyed it, and I was shocked to see how easily the words flowed on the page. I fell in love with the entire process of writing and publishing novels and starting building an audience of readers who enjoy what I write: exciting stories about love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey definitely hasn’t been without its bumps. Publishing a novel is like putting a piece of your soul out into the world to be judged, critiqued, and picked apart, so when I published my first book, that was my biggest obstacle. I had to continually remind myself that my book won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s okay because, at the same time, my book is someone else’s favorite book, and that’s the beauty of it.
When I was writing my second book, “American Gauntlet,” I found out I was pregnant! While I was so excited, I was also very sick, so getting “American Gauntlet” to the finish line was a huge feat, but so very worth it. Now, I tackle balancing motherhood with writing, editing, and marketing my books, which usually means squeezing in a writing sesh while my baby naps!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My motto for my novels is “exciting stories about love.” I’m a sucker for a good love story, but I also want a book to be unique and exciting, and fresh, and that’s what I try to accomplish with my stories. When someone is in the mood for a swoony, tension-filled romance with a plot that will keep them engaged and desperately wanting to know what happens at the end, my books are the perfect fit! My novels also don’t feature any explicit content, so they are suitable for a wide audience range.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Professionally speaking, the quality of the books I write is most important to me. Books are being published now faster than ever, and I never want to sacrifice the quality of my work because of my desire to get another book out in the world. Whenever I find myself feeling impatient about how long it’s taking me to get further in my writing career, I remind myself that I’m running my own race and that my readers would rather wait longer for a killer book than get a mediocre one sooner.
