Inspiring Conversations with DeJongh “Dee” Wells of SOLEcial Studies CommUNITY Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeJongh “Dee” Wells. They and their team shared their story with us below:

DeJongh “Dee” Wells

DeJongh “Dee” Wells is a sneaker anthropologist born and raised in St. Thomas and St. John, Virgin Islands. He co-founded Obsessive Sneaker Disorder (OSD) and the SOLEcial Studies CommUNITY Academy, America’s first sneaker business and culture academy.

We believe that sneakers are more than just required equipment for sports or a simple fashion statement. They’re a reflection of who we are and where we’re going. Kicks are the ultimate icebreaker, an effective bridge to lasting friendships and more.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t been smooth, and it’s been filled with potholes, but it’s because of these potholes that I’ve learned and grown.

Some of the most important lessons that I’ve learned came from going through some struggles dealing with the death of a parent or friend, as well as learning at an early age that we may plan, but God is the ultimate planner.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SOLEcial Studies CommUNITY Academy?
We teach people about the footwear industry from a creative point of view versus being solely a consumer.

We believe that sneakers are more than just required equipment for sports or a simple fashion statement. They’re a reflection of who we are and where we’re going. Sneakers are the ultimate icebreaker, an effective bridge to lasting friendships and more.

Sneakers tell a story, and footwear designers infuse their DNA throughout their designs, some very obvious and others subtle and not seen at first.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Communication is the foundation for everything that I do.

It’s imperative to understand what’s being said and then ask lots of questions to make sure that we’re on the same page so that we can have fun and be successful.
