Meet Gretchen Christensen of Magnolia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gretchen Christensen

Hi Gretchen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got my first sewing machine when I was 8 years old. My mom would help me make dresses and pillows. I made my own clothes and even a suit for a job interview. I made my kids bedding sets, matching clothes, and elaborate Halloween costumes. I wanted to turn my sewing and crafting passion into a business.

I have two businesses- Snips and Snails Children’s Boutique and Gretchen’s Alterations and Tailoring. I started Snips and Snails Children’s Boutique as a way for families to shop outside of big box stores. We love to pair classic smocking with a modern edge. For 2 years, we sold online only or at pop up markets.

I always loved sewing for my family. About 6 years ago my husband saw an urgent request for someone to alter a bridesmaid dress in our neighborhood. He volunteered my services. After that I was hooked. I began taking on clients in my living room.

In 2023, I opened a brick and mortar location for both businesses.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any business there are ups and downs. I remember when I would go to markets twice a month, you never knew how business would be. So many factors went into a great shopping experience i.e., weather, location, first time market… There were several times when I left with no sales. It makes you question your decisions and whether you should quit.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Snips and Snails Children’s Boutique is known for their high quality, one of a kind outfits. We especially love the outfits when there is room to personalize them with a monogram. I love the creative aspect of monogramming- endless fonts and color combinations.

Gretchen’s Tailoring and Alterations specializes in formal gowns. (We do casual alterations also). We just finished a custom prom dress. It was a stunning project. We usually take on 2-3 custom orders every quarter. We also love to share our love of sewing with the community. We offer group and private classes.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love how friendly the art community is. Everyone is always so willing to share their experiences with materials or where to find what you need. It helps with learning curves and finding the perfect materials for your creation.

My least favorite thing would be that Houston is an hour from Houston. Sometimes the clock is just against you and the road.
