Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sade Beaulieu.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started in my undergraduate years as I became passionate about helping people improve their mental health and well-being. That led me to pursue my counseling degree. Once I obtained my degrees, licensures, and certifications, I left my full-time job and opened my private practice.
My journey to private practice was not a straight line. It involved lots of late nights learning, trial and error, and a few missteps. While I was confident in my therapeutic skills, I had to establish my goals, identify my niche, and learn about marketing, which requires a much different mindset and the building of new skills. Once I was able to understand business, it was only then that I was able to develop systems within my practice that could be duplicated and adapted as things changed. Developing systems allowed me to focus more on my day to day role as a counselor vs keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes.
I am excited about being able to help inspire other therapists to think bigger about their goals, what they want to accomplish in their practice, and how to achieve those goals successfully.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like therapy, the road is not smooth at all, but what you have is what’s in your control, in your influence, and what’s not in your control.
As Counselors, we spend years learning and studying as we go through the process of school and licensure. It can be a challenge to keep learning after we become licensed. Some obstacles and challenges I faced as a business owner were Busyness, Burnout, Inadequacy, and Isolation.
Running a private practice can take a lot of time. Counselors often wear a lot of different hats in addition to being a therapist. Most of your time is spent juggling trying to grow your practice, seeing clients, and caring for yourself.
Sometimes, you may feel a little bit stagnant in growing, and these obstacles and challenges of running a private practice take a lot of mental and emotional energy, but when you have the desire to keep growing clinically, nothing can stop you.
