Inspiring Conversations with Rubab Mirza of Naba Dental & Orthodontics

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Rubab Mirza.

Rubab Mirza

Hi Rubab, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into dentistry began at a young age.

Growing up, I was fascinated by the sciences and strongly desired to help people. One of my early inspirations was my dentist, who was always kind and took the time to explain every procedure. This positive experience made dental visits less intimidating and sparked my interest in oral health.

During high school, I had the opportunity to shadow a family friend who was a dentist. Watching her interact with patients and witnessing her immediate impact on their confidence and health was incredibly inspiring. Then, I realized dentistry was the perfect blend of science, art, and patient care.

In college, I pursued a degree in biology, which laid a strong foundation for dental school. My undergraduate years were filled with volunteer work at community health clinics, where I saw firsthand the importance of dental care in overall health. These experiences solidified my decision to become a dentist.

Dental school at the University of Southern California was challenging but rewarding. I loved the hands-on nature of the training and the opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in dental technology and techniques. Each step, from my first successful filling to complex procedures like root canals and implants, reinforced my passion for this field.

What continues to drive me is the ability to make a real difference in my patients’ lives. Whether it’s relieving pain, restoring function, or enhancing smiles, the positive impact of my work is incredibly fulfilling. I’m also committed to ongoing education and staying at the forefront of dental innovations, allowing me to provide my patients with the best possible care.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
While my journey in dentistry has been enriching, it hasn’t always been smooth. Like any healthcare career, I’ve had to overcome challenges and obstacles. Here are a few of the significant struggles I’ve faced along the way:

Dental school is incredibly demanding. Balancing intense coursework with clinical practice was challenging. There were times when the sheer volume of information to learn and apply felt overwhelming. However, these challenges taught me resilience and the importance of time management.

Dental education costs are quite high, and managing student loans and other financial pressures was a significant burden. Balancing part-time work with my studies was necessary to support myself, which added another layer of stress.

Dentistry requires a high level of technical skill and precision. During my training, there were moments of frustration when procedures didn’t go as planned. For instance, mastering techniques like root canals and crown preparations took time and practice. Each setback was a learning opportunity, but it required patience and perseverance.

After completing my education, establishing my practice presented new challenges. There were many hurdles, from finding the right location to navigating the business aspects of running a clinic. Marketing my practice and building a patient base took time and effort.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance has been an ongoing challenge. Dentistry can be physically demanding and mentally taxing. Ensuring I have time for family, friends, and self-care while meeting the demands of my practice is something I continually work on.

The field of dentistry is constantly evolving with new technologies and treatments. Keeping up with continuing education requirements and staying updated on the latest advancements requires a commitment to lifelong learning. It can be challenging to find the time and resources to stay current, but it’s essential for providing the best patient care.

Despite these challenges, each obstacle has contributed to my growth as a dentist and a person. They have taught me the value of perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of a supportive professional network. Ultimately, these experiences have made me more empathetic and effective in my practice, and I’m grateful for the lessons learned along the way.
