Life & Work with Kiana Mcloughlin of Bellaire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiana Mcloughlin

Hi Kiana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Kiana Mcloughlin and I have lived in Houston, Texas for 13 years now. In 2011 I came over to the US with my family from the UK. At first it was hard to adjust but Houston became my home for life. I had always struggled in school when I was younger and if anyone told me I would be in AP classes through out high school I would have never believed them, but there I was passing my AP exams and taking dual credit classes. My senior year was cut short due to COVID. I’d like to think of it as a spring break that extended to graduation. With this being said starting college was hard when all of your in person classes are moved online. I am a visual and Kinesthetic learner so learning online did not work very well for me. I need to be in the class room where I can ask questions, take notes, and interact with what we are learning. I soon found out college was not going to be the route for me, at least not at this time in my life. I decided to take a break from school for about a year and met some amazing people along the way. During this time off I developed adult acne and didn’t know how to cope with my skin. One person in particular suggested I look into different trades such as cosmetology or esthetics so I gave it a whirl. I did my research and tried to pinpoint what career I could fall in love with. After much discussion and debate I found that going to school to become an esthetician would be the route for me. I was going through struggles with my skin and so were some of my close family members. I thought if i can really understand skin and why it does what it does maybe I can help the people around me and myself. So I took the leap and applied for beauty school while working full time. Beauty school was a ride and definitely had its highs and lows however I’m grateful for all the amazing people I met and all the information I learned. Once I completed school and got licensed on my first try, I proceeded to acquire different skills from different environments and diversify my expertise as an esthetician. I was able to acquire waxing, sugaring, chemical peels, dermaplaning, hydrafacials, brow mapping etc. I still have a lot more to learn and im looking forward to consistently making myself a better skin care expert. I have now attained my goal of working in a med spa and offering more advanced facials and services with products that can really help combat different skin issues. I’ve loved seeing my clients results and helping them relax and decompress when they come in to see me. I’ve found that I love pampering people and making them feel like they have a safe space to come to. I would have never guessed that this is where I would be now at 22 but I wouldn’t have done it any other way. The incredible people I have met at Lush Rx Med Spa will be relationships that I will cherish forever. I’m learning every single day and would like to go back to school to acquire my LVN license here in the near future. The future is so unpredictable and I look forward to everyday ahead of me knowing I’m doing what I love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I struggled with the Covid pandemic, It took away a majority of my senior year and hindered me from starting and succeeding in my collage career. I also did not get a prom or end of year ceremony for any of the activities I was involved in at the time. We weren’t able to say goodbye properly to our high school years. Also working full time while being in beauty school is not for the weak and did put a lot of stress on me at the time. But I think it builds character:)

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an Esthetician(skin care expert). I work in a Med Spa called Lush Rx where I offer hydra facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning, microneedling etc. I specialize in skin, and skin types. I’m very proud to work at this med spa as it has an amazing reputation in Houston due to our wonderful injector Krystal. I help people achieve their healthiest skin. I have extensive knowledge with Skinceuticals products and what each skin type needs. I love working with my beautiful clients and helping them achieve glowing, radiant skin. I struggled with acne myself and have cleared up my skin with Skinceuticals and facials when I thought nothing else was working. So I love to share my knowledge with others who are struggling in the same way.

What matters most to you?
My family, because they have supported me even when they weren’t sure if I was going to make it. But they allowed me to take the risks I needed to take, and they allowed me to make my own decisions without worrying about being judged or looked down on. They helped shape me into the woman I am today. They are my biggest cheerleaders and I love them with every atom in my body. Thank you guys for always believing in me.
