My passion for photography was ignited in the aftermath of a life-changing event – a house fire that left me with nothing but a miraculous, unharmed 35mm Canon film camera. It was a turning point that led me to enroll in a photography course as a form of personal therapy. Little did I know, that decision would shape the course of my life forever.
As I watched my first photograph develop in the darkroom, I felt an indescribable sense of connection and purpose; it was like magic! From that moment on, I knew that photography would not only be my passion but also my path forward.
I immersed myself in learning the technical aspects, refining my eye for composition, and exploring the power of lighting to evoke emotion. Through countless hours of practice and experimentation, I gradually honed my skills and found my unique voice as a photographer.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my photography business full time in 2008, right in the midst of a recession, presented its fair share of challenges. The economic uncertainty meant that clients were tightening their budgets, and competition in the industry was fierce. But I refused to let the tough times deter me from pursuing my passion.
One of the biggest hurdles I faced was breaking into the commercial photography scene, which was traditionally seen as a “man’s world.” As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I encountered skepticism and resistance as thick as Texas barbecue smoke. But hey, who doesn’t love a good challenge?
Commercial photography often requires extensive equipment setups, and as a solo entrepreneur, I had to be both the photographer and the roadie when I started out. Thank goodness for better budgets and assistants.

Podcasts: While I wish I could say I’m tuning into intellectually stimulating podcasts, the truth is, when I’m buried under a mountain of editing tasks, my secret weapon for sanity is Smartless – my guiltiest of pleasures.
