Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Cavazos.

Julian Cavazos

Julian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Photography wasn’t on my radar until a I was in college. As part of my Communications major, I took a Photojournalism class. I had never used a camera before, and suddenly, I was learning to capture the world through lenses, from portraits and news photos to the mesmerizing art of slow shutter speed.

After graduating, I landed a job as a journalist. Soon after, I bought a camera, intending to use it purely for fun. I experimented with everything, snapping shots of places around town. My passion grew, and my editor took notice, soon asking if I could take photos to accompany my articles.

Word spread among family and friends, and they started hiring me for family portraits and special occasions and I got better and better. In my subsequent full-time roles, photography remained an integral part of my work. I became the go-to person for capturing company events, promotional material, and everything in between.

The more I photographed, the more I realized my true passion lay in event photography. There’s something magical about capturing the energy and emotion of a live event, freezing those fleeting moments into lasting memories. It’s a journey that started with a college class and evolved into a fulfilling career, blending my love for storytelling with the art of photography.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve had my ups and downs. For example, there are busy seasons and slower seasons. I’ve had times when potential clients are interested in hiring me but I’m already booked for that day and time or I’m not available. Other times, such as during the Christmas holidays, business can slow down. It’s just the way business is sometimes.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I run a part-time photography business called Julian Cavazos Photography, specializing in event photography. Common events include small weddings, birthday parties, quinceañeras, Sweet 16 parties, corporate events, community events, and galas in the Houston area.

What truly sets me apart is my my candid, photojournalistic approach. I pride myself on being a silent observer, always on the lookout for those genuine, spontaneous moments that tell the real story of the event. Whether it’s the heartfelt laughter between guests, embracing each other with a tight hug, or guests doing fun activities, I strive to capture the essence and emotion of each occasion.

My clients appreciate this unique style because it goes beyond posed shots; it preserves the authenticity of their special moments. They love seeing their events through this lens, where every photograph is a piece of the larger narrative. This ability to freeze those perfect, unguarded moments in time is what makes my work resonate deeply with them.

How do you think about happiness?
In terms of my photography work, I’m truly happy when I’m photographing events that I love for clients who are wonderful and easy to work with. There’s something incredibly rewarding about collaborating with clients who clearly communicate their vision for their event. It allows me to deliver exactly what they’ve imagined, which is a great feeling.

While I’m at an event, I find immense joy in capturing the genuine smiles and laughter between guests. There’s a special kind of magic in those candid moments of happiness and connection. Often, I catch myself smiling behind the camera when I see them smiling, which is a clear sign that I’m having a great time, too. These moments remind me why I chose to do this – to capture and preserve the joy and beauty in people’s lives.

Once the pictures are delivered, I’m always so thrilled when they write a review thanking me for my services.
