Hi Samuel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Starting in 2010 in his church in a small town called Lufkin, TX, La’ Von J is a male singer in the Christian Rap/R&B scene whose music can be described as “contemporary Christian empowerment raps with a G-Funk/Neo-Soul Hip-Pop sound (or just Stevie Wonder & Lauryn Hill meet DJ Quik, Outkast, Travis Scott & Mac Miller). As if this angle were not unique enough, La’ Von J emulates the image of a contemporary rapper frequenting streetwear and punk rock styles, yet he circumvents the stereotype by confidently drawing attention to his impressively witty evangelistic rhymes and infectious jubilant grooves. Further exemplifying his uniqueness, La’ Von J is branding himself as being much more than just an Christian evangelist recording and touring artist, but also a multi media content creator who is simultaneously building a career as a Pastoral minister hosting his own podcast and appearing as a guest speaker on other christian podcasts, teaching in churches, and creating various media outlets promoting the word of God through films, documentaries, & TV shows.
Born Samuel La ‘ Von Jackson born to two christ following business minded, music loving parents, La’ Von J acquired an early passion for the word of God and for participating in the church specifically in the church choir. He noticed early on a natural talent for leadership through his communication skills specifically through his speaking and writing. He also found himself skillful in theatre arts through classes and summer camp involvement which all had a hand in the witty nature of the “La’ Von J Sound”.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth at all. My biggest struggle was overcoming my self. It’s easier to count yourself out than to believe that you can do more than you can imagine.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Christian Neo-Soul/Hip-Hop-R&B artist. I do everything from producing, singing, & songwriting to djing, graphic design, & marketing. I’m known for my ability to articulate my lyrics in a way that paints scenery in the minds of listeners. My music forces listeners to think outside the box.
I’m most proud of my persistence throughout the process of finding my sound and my audience of listeners.
What sets me apart from others is the fact that I take styles such as Neo-Soul/Hip-Hop-R&B and use their bounce like feel to uplift the name and word of God.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory has to be the first time I led a song in church. I never knew I had the natural ability to improvise notes & rhythms without any technical practice or understanding. It was very moving to see others truly impacted by my voice.
