Today, we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Rivera.
Hi Ruth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Ruth Rivera, I am a bilingual personal injury attorney.
I am a native Houstonian and a first-generation American and High School graduate. I received my law degree from the University of Houston Law Center and graduated in the top 11 % percentile of my graduating class. After graduating law school, I secured a position working for a national “Big Law” firm that exclusively recruits accomplished lawyers from top tier law schools. There, I was able to represent international corporations and insurance companies in cases dealing with fraud, insurance coverage, and breach of contract. However, while this line of work was intellectually stimulating, it was not the type of legal work I envisioned myself doing.
As such, and after a lot of thought and consideration, I switched practice areas and began representing injured victims. I worked for two of the best personal injury attorneys in the state and gained invaluable experience while simultaneously securing MILLIONS of dollars for deserving clients.
Then, in February 2024, I decided to go out on my own and Ruth Rivera Law was born.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I firmly believe that nothing worth having comes easy. Forging your own path, taking career risks and starting a business are decisions that will transform you – typically through hard lessons. Every stage of transformation brings its own challenges, some of which, you cannot prepare for. The road has not been smooth, but it has been completely worth it.
The biggest struggle I have faced in my career thus far is having to learn to pursue my goals while feeling scared of the unknown. For years I toyed with the idea of opening up my own law firm, but I was paralyzed by fear: What if I failed? What if I could not bring in business? What if I took a case and did not have all the answers? These fears prevented me from starting my own law firm.
I kept telling myself that “once I have X years of experience” or “once I go to trial X times” or “once I save up X amount of money” I would be ready to open my own law firm. However, one day I realized that I kept adding things to the list of things I thought I needed to do/know before I would be “ready”. This realization was a turning point for me because I accepted that I would never be 100% ready – no one ever is. Don’t get me wrong, you need to think ahead and have a plan, but after talking to many entrepreneurs, I have realized that the biggest roadblock people face is fear, that was mine. So, I took a leap while feeling scared.
What helped me take action despite the fear was to plan, prepare and pray.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I represent individuals after they have been injured in a variety of scenarios (i.e., injured at a refinery/work, car wreck, store, etc.). I am knowledgeable, determined and a warrior at heart. I truly care about my clients and about justice.
