Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Hughes
Hi Heather, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, makeup and hair have been integral parts of my life. I was that daughter who always played with my mom’s makeup, styled everyone’s hair, and indulged in dress-up games at every opportunity. I vividly remember sketching outfits on paper, bringing to life the creative ideas constantly rolling around in my head. Growing up, my involvement in dance and later, my major in dance during college, provided me with ample practice in understanding how makeup and hair interact with stage lighting.
Halloween was always a special time for me, a chance to exercise my creativity with unique and elaborate makeup designs. Now, with over 20 years as a professional makeup and hair artist, I’ve had countless opportunities to bring people’s visions to life. Whether it’s crafting a look tailored specifically for a bride to ensure she feels beautiful inside and out on her special day, or creating a bold, imaginative style, I take pride in my work.
Caring, listening, and a commitment to continuous learning have been the cornerstones of my career. Whether I’m creating a dramatic, avant-garde look, a glamorous bridal style, or a natural, effortless appearance, my goal is always to make my clients as excited about their look as I am.
The makeup and hair industry is ever-evolving, and staying current with the latest trends, products, and techniques is crucial. I never want to reach a point where I feel like I know it all; there’s always something new to learn, and I’m always ready to step up my game.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My career as a makeup and hair artist has certainly had its share of challenges. Like any profession, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Consistency, caring, and taking pride in my work have been key to navigating these challenges.
One of the most significant challenges came during the pandemic. With events canceled and people staying home, the demand for makeup services plummeted. This was a difficult period for many in our industry. However, I adapted by offering online makeup lessons and creating video tutorials for doing makeup on Zoom. This not only helped me stay connected with my clients but also allowed me to continue doing what I love in a new way.
Additionally, every project brings its own set of unexpected hiccups. I often refer to myself as the “MacGyver” of makeup because, when things go wrong, I find a way to make it work and keep smiling. Whether it’s a last-minute change in a client’s request or dealing with unforeseen technical issues, being resourceful and maintaining a positive attitude have been crucial.
Through it all, the key has been a commitment to continuous learning and staying adaptable. The makeup and hair industry is always evolving, and I strive to stay current with the latest trends and techniques. Each challenge has ultimately made me a better artist and more resilient professional.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success is defined by the positive impact I have on my clients and the fulfillment I derive from my work. It’s not just about achieving recognition or financial gain; it’s about seeing the joy and confidence on a client’s face when they look in the mirror and feel beautiful. Success is knowing that I have played a part in making someone’s special day even more memorable.
Success also means continually growing and evolving in my craft. It’s about staying curious, learning new techniques, and adapting to industry changes to provide the best possible service. When I can balance my passion for creativity with the practical needs of my clients, I feel successful.
Moreover, success is measured by the relationships and trust I build with my clients. Long-term client relationships and repeat business are testaments to the quality of my work and the genuine care I put into every project. When clients return to me and recommend my services to others, it reassures me that I am on the right path.
Ultimately, success is about loving what I do and maintaining a high standard of excellence, adaptability, and client satisfaction. It’s about striving to be better every day and making a meaningful difference through my work.
