Daily Inspiration: Meet Jesse Cushman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Cushman

Hi Jesse, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
There are days I wonder myself how I got here. I started as your typical finance person – trading for funds after undergrad and training to be a corporate finance professional during my MBA. I decided post Business School to try something different and ended up working for various early stage companies. Eventually I decided to start my own. Papabubble is my second business and definitely the more fun of the two.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every job has its challenges. On one hand, I get to dictate my day and the things my business will focus on. On the other hand, there’s no where to hide. If business is lagging, it’s because of me and that’s quite humbling. I genuinely believe that people want to see you succeed and love to help where they can, but that sometimes limits the constructive criticism you receive. Everyone loves candy and they’ll likely tell you that, but they may not tell you they have 5 cavities so they won’t be buying any.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love that our business allows us to be creative and bring joy to people. It’s rare these days to successfully combine work with passion. The jury is still out on this endeavor, but it does seem we’re headed in the right direction.

I’m most proud of being able to run a successful business with integrity – I pay my employees a living wage, and offer a product that I’m proud to call my own. We aren’t the cheapest in our category, but we are passionate about what we do and don’t cut corners on our process or ingredients.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think its always surprising for people who know me from one industry to learn that I also own a business in the other. I feel like owning a candy store is pretty rare and it amuses most people. Whenever I bring it up, I get a million fun questions and hear all about candies people love and their stories about them. I always get asked “why candy?” or “how did I get into this business?!” and we usually get a good laugh.
