Meet James Nelson of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Nelson

Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing graphic design for six years. I have made designs for people with small businesses, a non profit education, and more. In the beginning I didn’t really have a business since I was mainly focused on college. However, as time passed and I kept improving my skills in graphic design I started slowly building up my business. I created JJNGraphics not too soon after and began promoting my work on social media. Even though I’ve been doing graphic design for years now I still take the time to learn new things.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a graphic designer back when I first started felt like most people saw it as a hobby rather than my occupation and that was my fault because at the time I treated it like one. I was unorganized, I didn’t have a questionnaire, payment plans, and my main issue was that I was too nice. That led to me being disappointed and wasting my time. I had to go back to the drawing board to change and organize things in order for me to be more successful. Now things are a lot more easier and I don’t deal with as many struggles as I used to.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do logo design and branding. I create minimalistic style designs and try to balance the look of it so that there is not too much or too little going on with it. I’m honestly proud at how far i’ve came. Sometimes I look back at my old work and look at my new work and it helps me realize I have evolved more than I think. I feel that most artist often sketch out their work before they know what they want but for me I already have an idea in my head of how everything is going to look. I mostly create sketches when working for clients but for personal projects I automatically create the design. I often just look at designs around me and get inspired and my mind just comes up with something to create.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe the biggest risk to take is starting your own business and not learning how to conduct it regardless of what you do. I thought for me it would be simple but I realized it’s more to it than that. Being overly nice and trying to set a cheap price range when you took the time to develop your skills is a big risk factor because you’re hurting yourself. You have to be organized, and stand your ground on how you run your business. For me these days my biggest risk take is taking on a challenge that’s out of my skill. Someone once asked me for a 3D logo which was a challenge because i’ve always made 2D logos and I said okay knowing it wasn’t something I had much experience at but at the end of the day I somehow managed to get it done and meet their expectations. But that was something simple I would never risk doing something too complex like coding or UI/XD because that is something i’m still learning to do.
