Conversations with Nick Vago

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Vago

Hi Nick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been in the hair industry for 11 years throughout my career I’ve worked at so many different salons here in houston as well as austin. When I lived in austin the shops I worked at blew my mind with how inclusive they are. (It’s about your hair and you as a human….that’s it).
I realized that someone had to start somewhere and take that first step to make that difference happen there. And I, my Hometown did not have that yet. Everyone was still stuck in the mindset of this is a men’s cut or this is a women’s cut. I decided to open up my own spot And help our community press forward in provideing hair services to the community in a safe and nurturing environment a non-binary hair space that allows you to be your most unique and authentic self
A space where everyone and anyone is welcome that respects the safety of our space. So far it has been well received by the community and we reached our first year mark. I’m so incredibly proud of how far we have come and can’t wait to see where we are in another year or 5 years from now

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think with any new business. It’s always hard in some way. You never end up having the same crew that you start with. Or you end up with some money pit situations along the way But I’ve always been someone who is determined and whatever I put my mind to. I’m gonna get done so any challenge or struggle or problem that comes along. I face it head on

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We love to have a fun space fueled by art music and just all around friendship and fun. I feel like most hairdressers are creative beasts Especially if you work with color we do a lot of vivid and abstract and fun out of the box of color and we can’t wait to expand that into a larger community of Funky hair colors all over town. We get creative and push the boundaries with the cuts we get to do being a more “alternative space” brings forth the fun humans that wanna get fun and funky with their hair.
A fun interesting fact about the shop is that we actually have a tatoo artist in shop she has her own cute little room in the back that she slings ink from.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
COVID was a really interesting experience at the time. I was helping open a salon in Austin called Bishop’s cutting color and we literally had just opened in November. When COVID hit, we had to shut down and we weren’t even sure. We were gonna make it through, but we did after the fact was a lot of work. A lot of worry because we didn’t know how it would spread and. How it would go through, and it kind of set me up to be a little psychopath about cleanliness in the shop. So we always keep all sorts of disinfectants and masks available for people who have worries and want more of a personalized experience, but we also respect the fact that other people do have those worries, which is why we keep that proper protections and go above and beyond to sanitize as much as we can
