Today, we’d like to introduce you to Agnieszka Agnes Russo Sowa.
Hi Agnieszka, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Poland and grew up with six siblings. When my mother passed away at the age of nine, I took on the role of caring for my younger siblings. This responsibility made me strong and determined.
Although my family had a deep love for art, I didn’t have much time for painting while living on a busy farm. Initially, I studied clothes design and tailoring but later graduated in social psychology because I wanted to help people.
Money was tight, and I remember struggling to afford food. However, growing up on the farm taught me to love nature and see beauty in simple things. After university, I received a scholarship to study in Italy, where I met my husband. We lived in Norway for ten years before moving to the United States, where I rediscovered my love for painting.
I started painting when my second child was born. Adjusting to a new country, caring for little ones, and settling into a new home left me feeling overwhelmed. Painting in the evenings brought me joy and relaxation during those hectic times. I treasure those memories deeply even now. Initially, I worked with watercolors, and though my style evolved over the years, I eventually returned to my roots. Today, my art is soft, relaxing, and peaceful—exactly as I envisioned from the first moment I picked up a paintbrush. Bringing soothing feelings and calm moments to others through my art is what I love the most.
Reflecting on my journey, painting has been a constant source of solace and expression. It’s not just a creative outlet but also a way to connect with my inner self and the world around me.
Each brushstroke carries with it a piece of my story—of resilience, love for nature, and the beauty found in simplicity. As I continue to create from my home studio in Houston, TX, I aim to share these feelings of tranquility with others, hoping to inspire moments of peace and serenity in their lives as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been many years since I started painting. My kids are growing up, and my evenings have evolved significantly. Three years ago, I renovated my studio space, creating my small, serene oasis to work, contemplate, and create.
My art has undergone substantial changes over the years. I moved from soft watercolors to vibrant, energetic pieces and eventually circled back to soft, transparent layers as I rediscovered comfort and authenticity in my work. Discovering one’s own artistic style is an ongoing journey, and I eagerly anticipate what the future holds.
Being an artist is a rollercoaster ride, a sentiment shared by many in the artistic community. Over the years, I’ve encountered various challenges—from defining my style and voice to building my artistic community and establishing a strong online presence through websites and social media platforms. Despite living far from my family and childhood friends in Europe, I’ve always worked diligently to ensure my work is visible.
The support and motivation from friends and family have been invaluable, propelling many artists, including myself, forward. One of my most significant challenges has been finding my audience and maintaining a consistent monthly income. However, I’m determined to overcome these obstacles as I continue to grow and evolve as an artist.
I highly recommend becoming part of art groups—there’s no one who understands you better than fellow artists. Another effective way to tackle challenges is by working with art coaches, learning from art podcasts, and participating in in-person art festivals and shows. These experiences have enriched my journey and expanded my artistic horizons.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Experience the serene beauty of my art, crafted from moments of tranquility and reflection. Initially inspired by watercolors, my style has evolved to feature soft, relaxing compositions.
Each piece, adorned with my signature golden line, embodies a journey of healing and resilience, reflecting the Japanese art of Kintsugi. From my Houston studio, I invite you to explore and discover the tranquility and beauty within each brushstroke.
