Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Lipworth.
Carol, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The concept for Carol Lipworth Designs had its start in 2004. After owning and running a boutique hotel on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, my husband Steve and I converted the hotel into our home and retired there. With new found time on my hands and surrounded by the natural beauty of the jungle and ocean, I was inspired to do something creative.
While visiting family in Northern California I took a beginner jewelry making class at a local bead shop. We learned the basics of bead stringing – nothing extraordinary, but I was hooked! I realized that this was the creative outlet I was looking for. The next day I purchased some stones and supplies and then headed back to Costa Rica to begin designing. Little did I know that it would turn into a successful business that allows me to express my creativity, meet interesting people and travel the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge was finding the right places to sell my work. Some people were helpful, but many couldn’t be bothered. My work is very personal to me so dealing with rejection was difficult. And, in the beginning, when you don’t have a track record and you don’t really know yourself if your work is going to sell, it is even more challenging.
Luckily, my husband is my greatest supporter and cheerleader and he would always encourage me to continue.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Carol Lipworth Designs – what should we know?
Carol Lipworth Designs is a jewelry brand featuring one-of-a-kind, statement pieces with a sense of adventure. My designs are inspired by my travels and by the stones themselves. I’m known for my unique jewelry designs, using organic shapes and materials and unusual color combinations
I am a one-woman business. From buying the raw materials to designing and making each piece of jewelry, to marketing and servicing my customers, my hand touches everything.
I think what sets me apart from others is my unique design aesthetic and the fact that all of my jewelry is one-of-a-kind. The biggest compliment I receive (and I hear it a lot) is, “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” Being unique is a cornerstone of my business.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to build a business based on my own creativity and that my jewelry is worn by thousands of women all over the world.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m not sure I can name only one. A fervent belief in quality and customer service and believing in myself and my work.
