Meet Holly Knudsen of Flower Vibes in The Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Knudsen.

Holly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mom is very into gardening and as a small child I remember being both impressed (and also a bit annoyed!) as she would stop and identify flowers and plants everywhere we went! I have always had a strong interest in bright colorful things so it was very natural that I was drawn to flowers. After college, I began answering phones at a flower shop in.

Lubbock, Texas. I spent every free moment in the back of the shop watching and learning from the talented designers. In the summer of 2010, my mom and I attended the Benz School of Floral Design at Texas A&M. Shortly after that, I moved back to my hometown of Fort Worth and began designing at TCU Florist. I learned quickly as it was a very busy shop.

The woman who had been designing wedding flowers there for over 20 years taught me so much and after she was diagnosed with cancer, I had to quickly attempt to fill her shoes. It brought me so much joy to be able to utilize all of the floral mechanics she and the designers I worked with previously had taught me. It was easy to fall in love with creating wedding flowers!

2 years later while planning my own wedding, my husband and I moved to Houston where I started my own company, Flower Vibes. I was nervous moving to a bigger city and not knowing many people. I really can’t express my gratitude to all of the florists here that were so quick to befriend me! The group that makes up the “Houston Florists Unite” are not only dear friends to me, but also the best support system!

Almost 2 years ago I joined the Chapel Designers and I continue to learn and grow as a designer every day. Each wedding brings a new opportunity to bring joy into other’s lives and allows me the opportunity to create visions that before only lived in my heart!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle is paperwork! I have a terrible time keeping up with emails and anything involving numbers! I am definitely a creative mind!

I am so thankful for my amazing assistant, Hunter, as she helps me every day to stay organized and on top of things!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One day as a child my mom was gardening in the backyard. She had just planted these overflowing pots of bright fuschia and yellow snapdragons. I was immediately drawn to them because, well, they were bright and looked like they would feel like velvet! That was when my mom taught me how to “snap” my first snapdragon! We made the little delicate blooms hold hilarious conversations in silly voices!

25 years later, I call my mom “Snap” and she calls me “Zinnia”, which is one of my very favorite summertime blooms!
