Sure thing! Forget the Disney fairy tale; my story is more like a rollercoaster of epic fails and lessons learned, filled with more twists and turns than a Houston rodeo with the script still being written. Think of Rocky Balboa trying his hand at business—yep, that’s me.
I graduated in 2007 in Mexico as an Industrial Engineer, full of high hopes and big dreams. I decided to chase the American Dream and moved to Houston. But then the 2008 financial crisis hit me square in the face—like Rocky going down in the first round. Fresh out of school and ready to conquer the world, I found myself working in construction, building scaffolds. I remember asking my dad, “Where is this American Dream everyone talks about?” He just said, “It’s out there, boy. Go and hustle.”
So, hustle I did. I rebuilt my life and earned my Master’s degree in Engineering Economics from Texas A&M, which is something I’m particularly proud of since it was among the top 10 most difficult programs. This achievement led to me landing a fancy corporate job working with the top 100 Fortune companies, which I thought was the real American Dream. But life had more curveballs for me. I dabbled in different businesses tech startups, retail, and the restaurant business—all of which, unfortunately, failed. Each failure was a tough pill to swallow but added another chapter to my book of hard-earned wisdom.
Then COVID-19 hit, the ultimate plot twist. The pandemic wiped out what was left, including this fancy job that I thought was the real American Dream, and even led to my divorce. It was the darkest moment in my life. It felt like a scene from a Rocky Balboa movie—I had been knocked down so many times, and this blow seemed like it would finally keep me down. But I found the strength to get back up. Today, I’m proud to say I’m the top-rated financial professional in Houston, TX. I’ve also ventured into energy brokering with my new company, EcoWise Energy Services. It’s a fresh start, and while I’m just beginning to build momentum, I’m confident that my experience and determination will make it a success.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Not even close. My journey has been like driving through Houston traffic during a hurricane—chaotic, challenging, and unpredictable. The fear and uncertainty during tough times were intense, but they taught me the value of hard work and resilience.
The lesson? Nothing is secure, whether it’s a job or a business. However, in business, everything is on your terms. I’d rather run a business making $60k than hold a job with a $120k salary. Each business failure was a bitter pill to swallow. Owning restaurants sounded glamorous, but the reality was a harsh teacher. Every failure felt like a personal defeat, but it also became a stepping stone to greater things.
Through it all, my unwavering determination has been the constant. Each setback was a setup for a comeback. I learned to embrace failure as a part of the journey and to keep pushing forward, no matter how tough things got. These struggles have shaped me into the person I am today.
