Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Keyes
Hi Joshua, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been training for about 12 years but really got into doing it full time 8 years ago. I started this mainly because I wanted to help my family and also myself with being a fitter version. There’s something special about being able to bring my life of being an athlete and the need to help people to do a job that doesn’t even feel like work
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I’ve thought about giving up multiple times on the way to where I’m at now. When I was working part time working a split shift job, I would leave and train middle of the day and then after my second half of the shift, making little to no money after paying rent for the space. I learned a lot from that experience about how I couldn’t be affordable to everyone and still make a living. Like anything else I’ve had people pass during this time, it’s up & down with clients and you still have your own struggles. It’s not for the weak for sure but in the end I knew I wanted to do this full time. I’ve struggled with doubt on whether or not I was good at what I did and even if my prices were reasonable according to what I thought I was worth and people wanting to pay. It only took a few moments to confirm that it was indeed worth the sacrifices and I’m there to do a job that takes another party doing theirs as well. From being an entrepreneur to working for a company to being back on my own I’ve seen it all and worked through depression, ‘exposure jobs’, & long term clientele. The biggest struggles I would say are getting out of my own way and just trusting the process that you have in place and not having to be like everyone else.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about DominateOrDie Fitness ?
My business name is DominateOrDie Fitness, yes all one word and no I don’t come in with the intent of killing people during a workout. I offer personal/small group training as well as nutritional guidance for every thing from post op to sports training. It seems like a wide range but I’m big of having a solid base for even my most athletic and strong clients and that has me doing a lot of things that people do in physical therapy and should be continuing as they move into their fitness journey. I specialize in sports training mainly performance and speed, weight loss and strength training. I think the thing I’m most proud of with my brand as it stands today is my Annual Breast Cancer event ‘Sweating Pink’. It’s a way that I support a cause close to my heart. My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer my second year and college and still found a way to handle a few of life’s curveballs without telling us. She displayed a ton of strength during that time. Years later still cancer free and I do this event to support people who may be dealing with the same or even those who knew someone that didn’t make it. I wasn’t training at the time and it was the furthest thing from my mind but when I finally made the decision to go from athlete to trainer/coach I knew the name had to mean something to me. It was a combination of the mentality my parents and coaches instilled in me through years of training for sports and their drive through hard times, it was a Dominate Or Die giving your best mentality. No one sees all the work, scars, tears, joy or things you do but they should feel the love you put into what you do! I want readers to know that my brand is an extension of who I am and though the name may scare some people it’s more for the mindset of how I attack goals and how my clients live. It won’t be a 100% all the time thing but you can work on being better at something today to help your tomorrow. My services are for everyone if you’re just starting off in your fitness journey, haven’t done anything since you did the fit test in elementary, just coming off your college career or just trying to get you back, come on and get started. I’ll meet you where you are in your journey and guide you to a better, fitter version of yourself!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Book wise these are a few of my favorites:
1. If you want to walk on water you have to get out of the boat by John Ortberg
2. Life of a servant leader
3. Dying to live by Nakura Wade
Each of these help keep me connected to different parts of who I am.
Podcasts are about balance so it’s
1. Secrets to Success Eric Thomas
2. 85 south show
3. Just about any fitness podcast
Blogs are more for my mental, they speak to my hobbies from writing to music to diy.
