Hidden Gems: Meet Emily Ortega of Busy Bites Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Ortega

Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in the Houston area. I got my degree in Nutritional Sciences from Texas A&M University and moved back to Houston after graduation. I briefly worked in the fitness industry before becoming a Registered Dietitian. For the past several years I have been working in an inpatient clinical setting as a dietitian. My health and fitness have always been a top priority for me. I feel my best when I move my body in some way and fuel myself through food. However, after becoming a mom in 2022 I discovered just how difficult it can be for moms to prioritize themselves and their health. As I slowly found my routine again and learned how to balance work, motherhood, and self care, I became inspired to help others do the same. I started my private practice, Busy Bites Nutrition, because I believe improving your health through nutrition shouldn’t be difficult or complicated. My goal is to keep things simple, and help all of my clients make sustainable changes that will help them build lifelong healthy habits. I use a non-diet approach, so I don’t use any restrictive or fad diets with my clients. While I love to work with busy moms, I work with adults of all ages and have experience working with many health conditions along with general health and wellbeing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I feel very confident in my clinical skills and knowledge, the business side of things is definitely new to me. I love the challenge though. I’ve always known this is something I wanted to do, but taking the leap was definitely scary. Luckily I have several peers in the industry who have been able to answer my questions and help me along the way. It’s still stressful at times, but seeing my clients reaching their goals makes it all worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Busy Bites Nutrition is a private practice offering nutrition counseling services via telehealth. I have experience working with many health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and digestive disorders to name a few. However, most of my clients come to me for general health, wellbeing, and disease prevention. I believe that you can reach your health goals while still enjoying the foods you love, it’s all about balance. I work with individuals who are sick and tired of dieting and ready to make sustainable, lifelong changes. When you work with me, you’ll find we not only focus on what you’re eating, but we work on your relationship with food and your body as well.

What were you like growing up?
I was always very active growing up and involved in various sports. I also loved to cook, even at a young age. I loved the way that food could bring people together, and ultimately my love for food and fitness is what inspired me to become a dietitian. I’m still passionate about both to this day. Even as an adult, I’ve competed in Power Lifting, CrossFit, and have run a half marathon and full marathon. I also love to cook in my free time and will experiment with a new recipe any chance I get.
