Check Out Darrion Nguyen’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrion Nguyen

Hi Darrion, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey there! It’s been about two years since we last caught up, and let me tell you, a lot has gone down! Just a quick reminder: I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry and Theatre & Dance. After graduating, I started off as a research technician but stumbled into content creation and acting in commercials along the way. With my background in both science and theatre, I lucked out big time landing a super niche gig as Dr. Ion on Ryan’s World, a wildly popular YouTube channel for kids. Think of it as a modern-day, YouTube-style Bill Nye the Science Guy, where we dive into the science behind everyday stuff and mix it up with some awesome DIY experiments.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, my journey has been pretty smooth, though I’ve hit a few bumps along the way. There’s a common misconception about the arts not being a viable career, so I’ve faced some judgment here and there. But I’ve been incredibly lucky to have a ton of support from my friends and family. I’ve always been a creative person, and those who’ve known me my whole life weren’t surprised at all when I decided to pursue something in the arts. They’ve always known this was my path!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Many people initially recognize me from my science memes on the internet, but increasingly, especially among parents, I’m known for my educational science content and my role as Dr. Ion. On my personal platforms, I’ve started exploring sustainable practices, which led me to learn how to sew and upcycle. This interest sparked a deeper dive into fashion design, and recently, I’ve been creating content that combines various science topics with fashion.

What were you like growing up?
I was a VERY talkative and creative child growing up, and it got me trouble a couple of times in school. Aside from that, I was very curious and just wanted to try EVERYTHING. Once I reached high school, I was involved in a lot of extracurricular activities like varsity swimming, chamber orchestra, drama club, announcement team, decathlon. Just everything. Even now, while I’ve matured, I still love picking up new hobbies and finding ways to incorporate them into my work.
