Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Evans
Hi Nina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As far as I can remember, I have always had a love for numbers. At the age of 5 years old, I realized numbers were really fun because I enjoyed helping my Dad count his dominoes when playing with his friends. Numbers challenged me and solving math problems made me feel accomplished. By the time I was in 7th grade, I jumped in to help my family by assisting my Dad with managing the family finances. We would sit down weekly to go over the budget. We would calculate how much he would get paid and how we would spend his paycheck. I even wrote out the checks to the various utility companies and my Dad would take me to the billing office to pay the bill. This was fun and intriguing while giving me a sense of responsibility. I continued this journey in high school as I elected to take accounting courses. I had so much fun in class, and it was then I knew I was destined to be an Accountant. Even with this knowledge, while in college, I used credit cards uncontrollably. It felt like I was on top of the world and I could buy whatever I wanted as long as I had the credit limit to do so and could afford to make the minimum payment on the credit cards. This bad behavior with money continued and I spent part of my 20s being an emotional shopper and living life to its fullest (so I thought) while living paycheck-to-paycheck. In my 30s, I finally got tired of living like this, so I decided to go on a journey to achieve financial freedom. I was successful at paying off $105K in debt.
The journey to financial freedom was tough but worth it so I became a financial coach and started Nina Evans LLC. As your financial champion, I help others achieve financial freedom by partnering with my clients to prepare a practical budget, analyze their spending habits, and give them a strategic plan to pay off debt. Additionally, I use my 20 years of corporate experience as an accountant to offer accounting services to small businesses. My journey also inspired me to write my book, This Means More: It’s Bigger Than Me where I reflect on the various puzzle pieces of my life. Our life experiences are not coincidences; ultimately, they will propel you into your destiny and purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road and I have faced many challenges. I experienced job loss on my financial freedom journey and was unemployed for about 8 weeks. During this time, I had enough savings to maintain the necessities of my life and pay the minimum on my debt. This experience helped me understand the necessity of having an emergency fund. It is guaranteed to rain in life, and we must be prepared.
Additionally, I encountered moments where I got tired along the way and would stop being intentional about paying off my debt which only delayed my journey. Remembering my why and overarching goal of peace of mind in my finances helped me to get back on track. I learned having your finances in order changes how you see life and impacts the decisions you make. You even sleep differently at night when you have peace of mind in your finances.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
