Meet Rosemary Tovar of Northside Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosemary Tovar

Hi Rosemary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey with photography started in 2016, unexpectedly. I’d never really thought about getting into photography until my family surprised me with my first DSLR camera for my 15th birthday, along with a photography class from my older brother. I went to the class, and instantly knew this was what I wanted to do for a living. Since then, I’ve been all in. Besides photography, I’ve also got a passion and some solid education in videography and film.I’ve always been interested in visual arts, and through photography and film, I can express that in my own unique way.

Where did the name ‘The Vintage Productions’ come from?
It actually traces back to my original Instagram handle, ‘The Vintage Portfolio,’ which I started using in 2016. I decided to keep the name because it reflects a deeper meaning for my business. Photographs are timeless—they capture and preserve the beauty of life through my lens. I changed ‘Portfolio’ to ‘Productions’ because I envision expanding into film work in the future, not just photography and sounds more professional.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Learning the basics of photography came naturally to me. Understanding camera settings and mastering composition felt like second nature, as I always had a clear vision of how I wanted my images to look. However, the journey wasn’t always smooth. Starting a photography business without prior knowledge on how to run a business posed several challenges. I had to learn how to promote myself, attract clients, and overcome self-doubt and overthinking about whether my clients would like the results. There were times when I felt the need for a change in style or experienced “photographer’s block,” where the images just didn’t satisfy me. Budget constraints were another hurdle; I often found myself wanting to upgrade or invest in new equipment, but lacked the funds to do so. In the end, there’s always room to grow, and these experiences have only made me more determined.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle photographer specializing in portraits for couples, individuals, families, and more. I enjoy mixing things up with branding shoots for businesses, sports photography, or fun, creative shoots with unique edits. I love exploring new ideas and making my clients’ visions come to life through my lens, so I’m open to new ideas!

Since starting in 2016, I’ve made significant strides. Recently, I’ve upgraded some of my gear, gained new clients, received positive reviews, and watched my business grow. I’m incredibly proud of this journey and grateful for the support I’ve received from my clients and family.

What sets me apart is that I run my business solo as a Latina, Mexican-Salvadorian photographer. I handle everything—from inquiries and photo sessions to post-production and behind-the-scenes work. So when you reach out, you’re speaking to me personally. This allows us to connect more closely, and get to know each other. It’s a lot to juggle, but my business remains humble and small enough for me to manage it all on my own.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me, is never losing my passion, never losing the impact I can make for others. I’d like to make sure I capture a cherished moment for my client and contribute to their joy or confidence. Being able to contribute to something valuable motivates me.

This matters because it aligns with my passion for visual storytelling and connecting with people on a deeper level, getting to know their story before, during or after our photo session. For instance, when a client expresses how much they cherish their photos or how I brought their vision to life, it strengthens why I love what I do.

Ultimately, knowing that my work has a positive impact and helps others express their stories is what fulfills me and my business.
