Today we’d like to introduce you to Zechariah King
Hi Zechariah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally I’m from South Carolina. I grew up in the humble little town of Orangeburg and moved around a lot as a child growing up. Living in so many different places, I grew up seeing a lot of different cultures and experiences that have helped me grow as a person. I started producing my own music when I was 15 and have always had interest in hip hop from when I was younger. I’d say my top 3 are A$AP Rocky, Tyler, The Creator and Childish Gambino. I came up with the alias TOON (The Only One Noble) because I grew up in a rough environment and I was usually the voice of reason or the one who didn’t fit in. It’s what inspired me to start designing clothes at 17. Currently I’m working on more music and getting back in touch with my inner child through video games.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. I’ve struggled with homelessness before, having to stay hotel to hotel while doordashing for money. Some days I didn’t make enough to get a room and had to sleep in the car. I have a hard time trusting people at this point in life as well due to all the times people could’ve helped but simply chose not to.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I don’t like to put myself in a box so I just classify as an artist. I produce, write, sing, rap, I do everything except mix and master. My music is mainly composed of inspiration from my top 3 artists A$AP Rocky, Childish Gambino, Tyler The Creator and a lot of video game soundtracks. I think what sets me apart is being raised in hip-hop culture and blending it with geek culture. I always have a unique world view because of it.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think in 5-10 years we’ll see a shift towards more quality than quantity. I think appreciation for the actual art may return, but it’s on the artist to give something to appreciate.
