Check Out Kendra Moreno’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Moreno

Hi Kendra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a writer, I think. As a child, before I could even read, I’d bring picture books to show-and-tell and make up stories to go with the pictures for everyone. I continued the trend of writing stories all through my early developement years so it was kind of a no-brainer when I decided what I wanted to major in. I went to the Univeristy of Houston and graduated in 2014 with a BA in creative writing with a minor in marketing. At some point, I decided I wanted to share my stories with the world and started publishing as an indie author. This year marks my sixth year as an indie author and business owner and I couldn’t be prouder of how far I’ve come. I get to do what I love every day, and I get to show my son that if you work hard and chase your dreams, those dreams can become a reality.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think any indie author would say it’s a smooth road. When you first start off, it’s all about trying to get people to see your book. Then you have to get reviews. Then you have to convince people to keep reading your books as your publish. I became a full-time author by the end of 2020 at the height of Covid. I published, I think, fourteen book in 2020 alone and started treating my work as a business. By the beginning of 2021, I was turning a profit and supporting my son as a single mom. Still, the landscape changes everyday. As an indie author, I do all the jobs myself. I’m the writer, the marketer, the contractor, the one who packs orders, the one who goes to signings. Sometimes I’m the cover designer and the artist. New social media avenues appear all the time that I have to learn. Algorithms change constantly. The struggle is that the landscape is always changing, and so I learn new skills all the time, and then learn them again when they change. It can get exhausting sometimes, but because I love what I do, it makes it all bearable.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an indie author. Specifically, I write steamy romance novels in a variety of sub-genres. I currently have about fifty books under my belt. I do, also, have a children’s picture book I wrote and illustrated for my son when he requested a book he was allowed to read. He’s eight, so mom’s books are off-limits for now. I think I’m most known for very plot-driven romance books and for evoking emotions in my readers. I really enjoy taking a story and making readers fall in love with my characters. I’m probably most proud of my Sons of Wonderland Universe. It’s a universe currently spanning twenty books long with the twenty-first on the way, so I’ve spent all of my career adding to it. I’m incredibly proud of how the stories have grown over the years.

What’s next?
My plans are to continue writing what I love. I enjoy big tales of romance. I enjoy writing worlds that no one has seen before. I love telling a story different from anything I’ve ever seen. Mostly, I enjoy writing stories I’d like to read myself, with diverse characters that match the diversity of our world today. I don’t think I’ll ever run out of story ideas, and I hope to keep writing until my time on earth is finished. I’m really looking forward to writing new stories outside of ones I’ve already written. I’m also attending a large book signing in Australia next year called the Ballgowns and Books Event (or BABE for short) which I’m really excited about. Australia has been a dream destination for me so to be invited to sign there at a large event with other amazing authors is a dream come true.
