Meet Magaly Benitez of Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Magaly Benitez

Hi Magaly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello, my name is Magaly and I’m a home baker.

My journey began in 2020, when I started to make sweet treats that my father mentioned he loved like gelatin and flan. My father was a chef, so as many may know is hard to bake/cook anything for a chef. I started practicing at home making gelatin and flans. Once I believed my treats were good enough, I started to sell them to close family and friends. I wanted their feedback, I wanted to have a lot of people say that my treats were delicious before I let my dad try them. At the end of the day my goal was to have my father say that my treats/desserts were delicious. To have a retired chef say that your treats was delicious meant everything, all because chefs are the hardest critics.
The day my dad tasted my sweet treats he told me to stop working for a company and make my own business. He loved how it tasted. He suggested me to sell treats and cakes to everyone and not only to family and friends. He also suggested me to open a bakery in the future. I responded to him by stating that I love my job, the pay is good, and I wouldn’t trade that for selling cakes/treats.
Everything changed when my father passed away in July of 2020. My whole world was turned upside down. He passed away shortly after my youngest daughter was born in March. The last conversation we had was playing in my head on repeat, so I started to make more treats because of it. The first few months after his passing I remember making treats and looking at his picture in the wall and asking him: Is this, ok? Does this look tasty? Do you think people would like it? Do you like it?
After months of making sweet treats to make my dad proud, I started to realize that people enjoyed and loved my treats. My family was very supportive, they would order sweet treats from me to gift to others to promote me. I had customers who bought flan or gelatin desserts ask if I made cakes. I would tell them I didn’t but then I noticed more customers asking for cakes, so I decided to make cakes. I went from making sweet treats to making cakes all thanks to my customers who buy from me and recommend me to others. It took me two years to realize I love what I do. It feels amazing when my customers give me a positive feedback or send me pictures of them with the cake. Those smiles are what makes me happy. My family sees all the chaos that happens “backstage” when I’m making an order. They see the process from start to finish. They see my struggles and all the sleepless nights I have when I overbook myself. I do all that, with a smile on my face, all for my customers.
Now I can work from home, provide for my family, and watch my kids grow up. I’m proud to say that I’m a home business owner even if is a small one for now. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, and I am forever grateful to my family and customers for supporting my small business.
Now I’m getting collaboration offers and interviews and that just makes me feel accomplished. After all I experienced these past years is time to be happy. For a better future and creating more smiles.

Sincerely,
Magaly Rosalinda Benitez

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles along the way during the first 2 years of my home bakery business were :

– having to create multiple accounts on social media
– getting active on social media and having new content everyday
– Talking on my videos

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a home baker I am in charge of everything in my business. I am the :

-Customer Service
-Baker
-Decorator

-Content Creator
-Quality Control

I specialize in custom cakes and sweet treats . I’m know for matching the customers needs and even adding my touch .
I’m very proud that I get to be my own boss and at the same time watch my love ones .

What sets me apart from other home bakers in my area is that I make the most detailed cartoon cakes and also my hand made 3D figures .

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Houston is where I was born and raised and will always be part of me. I love that in this city there is people from all countries. The one thing I like least about Houston is the heat because of the transportation of the cakes.
