Today we’d like to introduce you to Goldie Offiah
Hi Goldie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Southwest Houston, TX to Nigerian Immigrant parents. As one might imagine, they aspired for me to find a career in the Medical or Legal field, however that was not quite my passion. In High School, I was the president of a Marketing Organization called DECA and through that experience I knew I wanted to work in corporate America. I went to college to study Accounting but ended up discovering the world of Human Resources due to my passion for providing service and being a problem solver for others. Today, I currently work as an HR Business Partner for a notable Engineering Company in the Clear Lake area. When I’m not working, you will find me participating in some type of physical activity. Growing up, I was an athletic kid, however due to my size and built, I was still considered overweight. Growing up in a world where women are consistently shamed for their bodies, I had to learn to embrace the physique I was born with As I’ve gotten older, I continue to prioritize building an active and healthy lifestyle. I created an Instagram/TikTok Platform called ImNotATrainerBut, in which I post weekly workouts and fitness content to encourage others to keep an active lifestyle while simultaneously keeping myself accountable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With any form of progress, there is going to be a struggle. After college, I struggled to find a job in my career so I decided to go back to grad school. During those two years, I became the heaviest I’ve ever been in my life. A combination of eating out, eating late and not exercising were the contributing factors to that. When I finished grad school, I joined a 3 month boot camp with a local Houston trainer in which I was able to shred 25 pounds. That gym was the catalyst to my adult fitness journey which has ultimately changed my life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been an HR Professional for 9 years. Currently, I work as an HR Business Partner for an Engineering Company where I support a department of 800 employees with various HR issues relating to Employee Relations, Labor/Employment Law, Recruitment, Compensation, Benefits, Payroll and Performance Management. What I love most about my job is really being able to find a solution to someone’s problem. Naturally, I’m a solution-oriented individual so when things are going awry, while it may be stressful, creating a resolution is all too rewarding. What sets me apart from others in my field is that I truly care about the employees that I work with and their concerns, so I genuinely do my best to represent on their behalf.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I would like to say I was a pretty cool kid. I was super friendly, extremely social and easy to get along with. This has carried on into my adult life as I am a super extroverted individual. I enjoy being outside and meeting new people.
As social as I was, I was also pretty studious and big tom-boy! If I wasn’t inside reading a book or watching jeopardy to learn random trivia, I would spend a lot of time playing outside with my brothers and the kids around our neighborhoods. We would play basketball, race and ride our bikes across the street. I may have wrestled a couple of the kids a time or two but we’ll leave that story for another day.
