Meet Roberto Quijano of Quijano Law Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberto Quijano

Hi Roberto, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an immigration defense attorney in Houston with 8 years of experience in my field. My passion is to defend the rights of those in my community who lack the voice and knowledge to fight for themselves. I always knew I wanted to be an attorney; I was just unsure what type of attorney I wanted to be. My mother had gone to law school in El Salvador while she was pregnant with me, and due to the pregnancy, she was unable to complete her studies. So, I believe this passion for fighting against injustice was ingrained in me even before I was born.

Part of my story is defined by one of the most influential people in my life, which was my father. In 2001, at the age of 12, I immigrated to the United States with my parents from El Salvador. At the time, my dad owned a small truck dealership in El Salvador, and he came to the United States to expand his business. However, I saw how much he struggled to adapt and learn how to navigate the economic system in this country. Eventually, his business went belly up during the 2008 crisis, and he had to convert the truck dealership into a sheet metal provider. This new business took off and did well. Even now, his sheet metal business is thriving.

My father’s influence extended beyond our family. He founded a small community church, La Familia de Jesus, which is predominantly made up of immigrant families. As a young man, I was actively involved in the church and served our community. This experience has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and a commitment to serving others, particularly those in our immigrant community.

Growing up watching my father fighting through his struggles but never giving up while still serving our local immigrant community defined my perception of success. All these shaped my future and the decisions that led me to become a business owner who is an advocate for immigrant rights.

I began my career in Immigration Law working as a law clerk for a retired immigration judge, where I began my practice as an Immigration Attorney after passing the Texas bar. Soon thereafter, I worked in one of the largest immigration law firms in Houston, which required me to defend Immigrant rights daily in front of several judges in Houston and across the United States. After gaining this invaluable experience, I was retained by an up-and-coming firm to build and supervise their litigation department from the ground up. For several years, I not only successfully defended several clients in immigration court, but I also supervised and trained new attorneys to defend clients in immigration court.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. I think one of the biggest challenges as a new business owner is wearing many hats at the same time. As an attorney, I was very comfortable performing all of my job duties. However, law school does not teach how to run a business. I had to quickly learn on the job how to manage people and ensure the business’s cash flow, all while still providing the best defense for my clients.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Quijano Law Firm?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories has to be my first day in 3rd grade. Our teacher did an icebreaker with the class, which consisted of going around, saying your name and your biggest pet peeve. When it was my turn, I shared that my biggest pet peeve was witnessing an injustice. Of course, everybody laughed because that was so logical, but to me, that was something that should never happen to anyone. To this day, I believe that event set me on the path that I am still on today, fighting for those who suffer injustices.
