Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Mallett
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi there! Thank you for the interview! I’m Carol Mallett, the proud owner of Amazing Outlooks Travel Agency since 2017 and a seasoned travel advisor. As a wife, mother, grandmother, empty-nester, singer, actress, theatre director, and retired classroom teacher, I bring a diverse background to my role in travel.
After teaching literature and theatre arts for over 30 years, transitioning to a travel advisor felt like a natural step. Both literature and theatre invite us to explore the world from different perspectives, and travel does the same! I see my role as a travel advisor as an extension of my teaching—just on a grander scale. My passion for helping others experience the world is as strong as ever.
Building relationships has always been a key part of my work, whether with students or now with travel clients. I strive to offer personalized service that fits each traveler’s unique needs, desires, budget, and style. Many of my clients return time and again because they appreciate the care and attention I put into every trip. Over time, we get to know each other well, and planning becomes smoother with each journey.
Whether you’re looking for relaxation, romance, adventure, cultural experiences, a connection with nature, or time with family and friends, my goal is to make the planning process as easy as possible so you can fully enjoy your vacation.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest daily challenges is maintaining a work/life balance. As an entrepreneur, it’s tough to stick to a set schedule, especially since my clients are often spread across different time zones and occasionally need help at all hours. Plus, I’m so passionate about what I do that I sometimes get so hyper-focused in work that I forget to do laundry, cook dinner, or even eat. Balancing my enthusiasm for travel planning with everyday life can definitely be a juggling act!
The biggest single challenge I’ve faced as a travel agent was definitely the global travel shutdown during the COVID pandemic. With all the constantly changing rules—testing, vaccinations, quarantines—I found myself doing triple the usual work for each trip. It meant booking, canceling, re-booking, and sometimes doing it all over again, often without any pay. But looking back, it was a chance to really shine. I was able to offer my clients a personal touch and support during a tough time, which they might not have received from call centers. Because of that, I ended up getting a lot of referrals as soon as travel started up again.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Amazing Outlooks Travel Agency?
When I first started out, I mainly just booked cruises and all-inclusive resorts. These days, I work primarily on crafting custom itineraries for travelers exploring Europe. I work with a wide variety of clients, from young families or solo travelers on a tight budget to seasoned adventurers seeking luxury, and everyone in between. For those new to travel, I help set realistic expectations to ensure everything goes smoothly. I don’t just “book trips”—I’m involved in asking questions, listening, researching, counseling, and juggling various travel components from multiple suppliers to create a seamless, personalized itinerary for the client. Although my process can be time-consuming, I absolutely love it! That’s why I’ve grown my team with three additional travel advisors, each specializing in different travel styles and destinations. Among the four of us, we can handle just about any type of trip to anywhere in the world– providing the personalized service that’s consistent with our brand.
I believe what really sets us apart is relationships! We actually love what we do and CARE about our clients. We provide service that you just can’t get from a faceless online booking system.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those just starting out as a travel agent– or as any entrepreneur– is to remember that success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s perfectly fine to learn as you go, and to ask for help from other professionals in your field. The more experience you gain, the more you’ll learn, and the better you’ll become at your craft. With time and effort, you’ll eventually start earning a living wage.
