I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would love to share some reflections on the challenges I’ve encountered while running a photography business, let’s call them entrepreneurial struggles. As someone deeply invested in this field, I believe these insights could provide valuable content to fellow entrepreneurs.

Running a photography business has been an incredibly rewarding yet demanding journey. Here are a few of the key challenges I’ve faced:

Market Saturation: With so many talented photographers out there, standing out in a crowded market has been an ongoing struggle. The sheer volume of competition makes it essential to continually innovate and differentiate my work.

Client Expectations: Managing client expectations has proven to be a delicate balancing act. Each client has unique visions and requirements, and aligning their expectations with what’s feasible can sometimes be a complex negotiation.

Financial Fluctuations: The financial instability associated with freelance work is another significant challenge. Income can be unpredictable, and managing cash flow while investing in new equipment and marketing has required careful planning.

Work-Life Balance: Balancing the demands of running a business with personal life has been difficult. The nature of the work often involves irregular hours and high-pressure deadlines, which can encroach on personal time and well-being.

Technological Advancements: Keeping up with rapid technological changes and ensuring that my equipment and skills remain current has been both costly and time-consuming. Adapting to new trends while maintaining a high standard of work is an ongoing challenge.

I believe these experiences not only highlight the resilience required in this field but also offer a genuine look into the realities of managing a creative business.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Queens, NY as a young girl of Trinidadian parents was quite the experience. Having picked up an accent thaty you were surrounded by constantly led to a different world once I started High School. Queens is such a diverse and vibrant place, so there’d be a rich blend of cultures and experiences.

My Trinidadian roots had a strong sense of family and community, with a blend of traditional Trinidadian values and the influences of New York City’s dynamic environment.

Personality-wise, I was very outgoing and adaptable, given the multicultural mix in Queens. I wanted to be a part of everything to show I belonged. Interest-wise, I enjoyed a variety of activities—from participating in local cultural festivals, involved in family traditions and celebrations like Carnival in either Trinidad or on Eastern Parkway on Labor Day, which became a big part of my life in wanting to perform as a dancer. After being exposed to the lights of glitz and glamour of many famous artists in Queens, like LL Cool J and Salt-n-Pepa, I too wanted to be famous.

That lead in my ambition to want to be a rapper. That strong sense of pride in my heritage and a curiosity about the world, balancing my cultural roots with the diverse experiences Queens has to offer made me the well rounded individual I am today.

After pursuing my short lived rap career, I finished school and worked in Corporate America for the past 20 years before Covid19 hit the world. Then, I decided that life was too short to waste and I decided to be on the other side of the camera.
