Conversations with Shelby Dewboys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Dewboys

Hi Shelby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in photography in middle school, around 8th grade I’d say. I grew up in a home with a drug addict and I think taking photos became my outlet from that. My first camera was given to me my freshman year of high school for Christmas. I would walk around the neighborhood and take pictures of everything that I found beautiful. Even if I didn’t find it beautiful, I always had a way of making it look that way. I realized early on that my camera was my safety blanket. I felt safe behind the lens because I knew that I would only see what I wanted to see. As I’ve grown up, the circumstances are different, but my love for the camera and making things look exactly as beautiful as I think they are has stayed the same.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think Photography is ever a smooth road. The economy and demand for photos is ever so fluctuating. I’ve also always been into photography for more than money and I think that’s always been my biggest challenge within myself, especially when trying to make this into a living. I just love to create so much.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the Owner/Photographer of SKD Photography. I specialize in Portrait photography and dabble in wedding photography. I’m probably known best for my use of light, angles and outside elements while shooting. I’d say I’m most proud of that. I can make use of pretty much anything (rain, not so great backgrounds, etc..) and I think that also sets me apart from others. I think some people go into photography thinking it’s just “Point and shoot”. I think I have a really good grasp on how angles, light, poses, lines, editing, etc.. can enhance and set your photos apart from others.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I think most can attest to the fact that I’ve always had a really strong, bold and outgoing personality. I grew up watching “Friends” and wanted Chandler Bings personality to be my own. I have always been interested in anything and everything. I’ve always loved to read books, take photographs, play sports, draw, etc.. You name it, I’ve probably been interested in it. I think that’s because I’ve always wanted the know the “How” and “Why” behind everything. I just love knowing everything I can.
